MSU was led by senior Becca Lamb, who tallied 10 kills and a .381 (10k-2e-21ta) hitting percentage.
The teams were evenly matched throughout the first set, combining for 14 ties, six lead changes and forcing the set into extra points. The Eagles held a lead late in the set (18-21), before MSU rallied back with a 4-0 run to take a brief 23-22 advantage. Morehead State rebounded with a 2-0 run to reach match-point, but the Racers countered with a 2-0 run of their own to force extra points. The teams traded points over the next few serves before the Eagles earned the 27-29 win.
Morehead State took control of the second set at the beginning with a 5-1 run, never allowed the Racers to get their momentum going and earned the 9-25 win.
The third set was similar to the first, as the teams battled to eight tie scores and through four lead changes. It was a back-and forth battle through the first eight severs before the Racers went on a 4-0 run to take the lead. The Eagles slowly fought back and took the advantage back (12-15), with a 5-0 run. MSU tied the set at 15 and then took a 20-17 lead, with a 5-0 run of their own. Morehead State countered with another 5-0 run to take a 20-22 advantage before the Racers again tied the set at 22. The next four serves went back-and-forth, but it was a final 2-0 run that gave the Eagles the 23-25 victory.
MSU struggled with offense on the day, recording a .035 (30k-26e-113ta) hitting percentage, while Morehead State hit .213 (43k-17e-122ta). Part of the reason for the higher number of errors for both teams was because of blocks, with the Eagles holding a 7-10 advantage.
The Racers will now have to wait to find out the results from across the conference matches to determine their seed in the 2010 OVC Championship in Morehead, Ky., Nov. 18-20. The highest possible seed the MSU could get is fourth and the lowest sixth.
Notes: This is the fifth-consecutive season that MSU has earned a spot in the OVC Championship…the Racers have made the field in all but two season since 1988…senior Sara Hayden is now 37 kills from garnering 1,000 for her career…fellow senior Ashley Nenninger is 13 from the same accomplishment.
