Nenninger and Guo Earn All OVC Honors Heading into OVC Championship

After having to wait for all the OVC matches to be played out last weekend the Murray State volleyball team captured the No. 4 seed at the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Championship, hosted by Morehead State in Morehead, Ky., Nov. 18-20. The Racers will face No. 5 Eastern Kentucky, Thursday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. (CST) in the quarterfinal round. A win would pit Murray State against the No. 1 seeded Eagles, which would be a replay of the final weekend of the OVC regular season.
Scouting Eastern Kentucky
The Colonels finished the 2010 season with an 11-17 overall record and tied the Racers for fourth, with a 9-9 record in the conference. EKU dropped their final four conference match-ups of the season and were 1-4 in their final five matches of the year.
EKU has three main hitters, all with over 225 kills. Autumn Harms is the most consistent hitter on the team, with a .215 (2234k-102e-614ta) hitting percentage, but she saw 300 less swings than Ashley Edmond and Lauren Snyder got. Edmond leads the team with 346 kills and 1062 attempts, but has a .143 attack percentage. Snyder hits at a .160 pace, with 308 kills, 152 errors, and 976 attempts.
As a team, the Colonels have a .157 hitting percentage, with only two members of the team hitting above .200. However, EKU holds its opponents to a .198 mark. The Colonels trail their opponents in most areas on the box score. The only area that they have a slight advantage is in digs at 16.2 to 15.9 per set.
Against the Colonels
In the two matches with EKU this season, senior Sara Hayden led the Racers with a .409 (11k-2e-22ta) hitting percentage, while fellow senior Becca Lamb hit at a .317 (16k-3e-41ta) pace and added five blocks. Senior Ashley Nenninger was the teams leader in the kills column, with 17. Sophomore Cassy Woolverton played just one match against the Colonels, but tallied 11 kills and three blocks. Junior Kayleah Sauer led the team defensively with 38 digs.
The teams split the series over the season, with each team earning a 3-0 win on their home court. The Racers held advantages in hitting and blocking. MSU hit .225 (77k-25e-231ta), while holding EKU to a .172 (89k-43e-268ta) mark. The Racers also out-blocked the Colonels 13-6.
Autumn Harms was the top producer for EKU, with a .318 (20k-6e-44ta) attack percentage. Lauren Snyder led the team with 23 kills and three service aces, while Ashley Edmond added 19 kills and Hannah Groudle contributed 14.
The Series
The Racers regained an advantage in the all-time series with the 3-0 victory, Nov. 12 at Racer Arena. The all-time series now stands at 29-28, in favor of MSU. This will be the sixth meeting between the teams in the OVC Championship, with the Racers holding a 3-2 advantage.
Scouting Morehead State
The Eagles finished the 2010 season as the OVC Regular-Season Champions and have a 24-7 overall record and a 17-1 mark in the conference. Morehead State is on a 10-match winning streak heading into the conference championship.
The Eagles have two go-to players on offense, each having over 700 attempts and 300 kills. Kaitlin Craven is the standout leader of that group with a .233 hitting percentage (341k-116e-965ta) and 39 service aces. Holly Evans is also a threat for Morehead, with a .369 hitting percentage (332k-71e-707ta) and 89 blocks. Annie Gruenschlaeger is the team's leader at the net with 110 (16-94) blocks.
Morehead has a strong team hitting percentage, with a .232 mark and also holds its opponents to a .150 mark. The Eagles are also a strong serving team, with 1.6 aces per set and only allow 0.7 per set to land on their side. Morehead is strong in all areas of the box score, with its closest stat column in blocks (2.1 to 1.8 per set).
Against the Eagles
The Racers, like all but one team in the conference, fell to Morehead in both meetings in 2010.

The Racers struggled to get their offense going against the Eagles, hitting just .086 (59k-40e-221ta), while Morehead hit at a .243 (95k-33e-255ta) pace. Murray State also had a disadvantage in service aces (4-12) and blocks (1.8 to 2.7 per set).

The Eagles lead the all-time series 34-26. If the teams were to play against each other in the OVC Championships it would be the seventh meeting in the tournament. The Racers currently hold a 5-1 advantage when playing Morehead in the conference championship.
Nenninger and Guo Earn All-OVC Honors
Senior Ashley Nenninger and junior Jade Guo have both been named to the 14-member 2010 All-OVC Team. The league changed the honors from having first and second team distinctions for the 2010 season, to just have one team. The honor is the first for Nenninger and the third-straight for Guo. Guo was named to the All-OVC Second Team in 2008 and 2009 and to the All-Newcomer team in 2008 after earning 2008 Freshman of the Year.
Nenninger finished the OVC season ranked 5th in kills (3.41) and 8th in points (3.74) against league teams. Guo was 2nd in hitting percentage (.339) and fourth in assists (10.31/set).
Sauer Receives OVC Honors
Junior Kayleah Sauer earned her first OVC weekly honor of the 2010 season in the final weekend of the regular season, as she was named the OVC Defensive Player of the Week, for Nov. 15.
Sauer led Murray State with 38 digs over the weekend, including a 21-dig performance against Eastern Kentucky. She recorded 6.33 digs per set which was above her season average of 4.17. She also added four assists and three service aces.
Woolverton Making Presence Known
After seeing limited action all season, sophomore Cassy Woolverton has made an impact in the line-up in the last six matches. The Gideon, Mo., native has played a key role in those matches and had a standout performance at Tennessee Tech. Woolverton tallied career-bests of 21 kills, a .333 hitting percentage, and two blocks against the Golden Eagles.
Sara Stepping Up
Senior Sara Hayden has stepped up her performance at the end of the regular season. Since Oct. 26, Hayden has tallied double-digit kills in four matches. The Louisville, Ky., native also tallied her second career double-double, with 11 kills and a career-high 11 digs against UT Martin. She has also added to her blocks totals and has moved into 2nd on the career block assist charts (231),to 4th on the total block list (277) and to 10th on the block solos (46) lists at MSU.
Racers Raise Over $3,000
In the third year of the Murray State volleyball team's annual fund raiser, Swinging To Eliminate Cancer, the team raised a total of $3,262.05 to be donated to the Murray-Calloway Country Regional Cancer Center in honor of Kendra Schwepker, the wife of head coach David Schwepker.
Since the fund raiser began, in the 2008 season, the Racers have raised over $9,500 for local and national charities.
“I want to thank everyone who donated to our fund raiser this season,” said head coach David Schwepker. “It means a lot to the team and to my family to be able to help others in the Murray-Calloway Country community affected by cancer.”
Making the List
Senior Becca Lamb became just the ninth Racers player to record 1,000 Kills in their career, when she landed her first kill against Tennessee Tech (Oct. 2) in Racer Arena. The Highland, Ill., native has now tallied 1,133 kills, which places her 5th on the all-time kills list at MSU. She is 72 from 4th held by Lea Ann Allen (1,205). Fellow seniors Sara Hayden and Ashley Nenninger are also trying to make the list this season. Hayden needs 37 kills and Nenninger needs 13.
