No. 4 Racers Fall Short at OVC Championship with 1-3 Loss to No. 1 Morehead State

Murray State was led by seniors Becca Lamb and Ashley Nenninger, who both garnered 15 kills. Lamb hit at a .351 (15k-2e-37ta) clip and added five digs and two blocks. Both players ended their careers in the 1,000 Kill Club for the Racers. Lamb tallied a total of 1,152 kills and Nenninger garnered 1,020.
The first set was back-and-forth for the first six serves before the Eagles went on their first run (4-0) that gave them the lead for good in the set. The Racers fought hard throughout the set, but could not get closer than one point the rest of the way and dropped the opening set, 21-25.
The second set was similar to the first as the teams traded the first four serves and then a team went on a run and never relinquished the lead throughout the set. This time it was Murray State that went on a 3-0 run to take and lead and only allowed Morehead State to tie the set, but never gain an advantage. The final tie came late in the set, after the Racers had built their lead to five (22-17). The Eagles then rallied for a 5-0 run that tied the set at 22. However, Murray State kept fighting and went on a 3-1 run to end the set with a 25-23 victory.
The third set was a tug-of-war from start to the finish, with the teams combining for 16 tie scores and five lead changes. With the scoreboard reading 20-21, in favor of the Eagles, Morehead State went on a final 3-0 run that led them to set-point. Murray State fought off the loss for one more point before falling 21-25.
The Racers took an early 3-1 lead in the fourth set, but then the battle from the rest of the match resumed and the teams fought through 10 tie scores and three lead changes before a winner was determined. The final tie came at 19 when Murray State went on a 4-0 run that tied the set and gave them a 21-19 advantage. The lead was quickly lost though and Morehead State earned the final six points of the match to earn the 21-25 victory.
The teams battled each other throughout the match and it showed on the box score, with very close or equal numbers in many columns. The Eagles earned a 10-8 advantage in blocks and a 77-75 dig advantage. The teams both garnered three service aces and eight service errors. However, Morehead State earned a .171 to .212 advantage in the hitting percentage column and a 64-49 lead in kills.
Notes: The Racers are now 23-17 when playing in the tournament in 21 appearances...when the Racers earned the win in set 2 it was the first set win over Morehead State since Sep. 18, 2009 when they lost 1-3…since then the Eagles have swept Murray State in the last three matches…redshirt-freshman Wendi Zickfield saw her first action since Nov. 6 at Jacksonville State.
