Final Results
The Murray State Rifle team came home with the championship of the JSU Gamecock Invitational at the Jacksonville State range in Jacksonville, Ala., marking the end of the first half of the 2010-11 season.
The Racers posted an aggregate 4641 and defeated the host JSU (4623) and Memphis (4582).
“I was overall satisfied with the performance we gave,” MSU Head Coach Alan Lollar said. “It was a tough match mentally, coming at the end of the semester and on the road, at JSU.”
The Racers' smallbore was in good shape with Kaitlin Cleven leading the way with a 578, while Emily Quiner and Ashley Rose added a 575 each and Kyle Donnan and Nehemiah Gillman both pitched in with a 573. Rose's 575 was a personal best.
MSU had a smallbore 2301 and followed with a 2340 air rifle score.
“Air Rifle was a little down,” Lollar said. “But Caroline Barber shot a personal best with a 587, she's been doing a great job training and it's starting to pay off. Nehemiah turned in another good air rifle match with a 588.”
The Racers had a good first half of their 2010-11 season with competition against some of the top ranked teams in the nation including defending NCAA champion TCU and also against Kentucky, West Virginia and Army.
“Now it's time to take care of exams and enjoy the holidays,” Lollar added. We open at home with two big matches against Nebraska and Ole Miss. It's always good to see Morgan, her team has the potential to shoot well any day. Ole Miss is posting some really good scores. They will be ready for us and it will be a challenge.”
Nebraska Coach, Morgan Hicks was an NCAA champion and Team USA competitor for the Racers in 2004.
MSU hosts Ole Miss at the Spurgin Rifle Range Jan. 15 and Nebraska comes in Jan. 17.
