The Murray State Racers opened their appearance in the 76 Classic Thursday with a 55-52 win over Stanford in Anaheim, Calif., at the Anaheim Convention Center.
The Racers (3-1) led from start to finish in posting their first win over a Pac-10 squad since beating Arizona in 1956. The game also marked only the second Thanksgiving Day game in MSU's 86-year history after first playing in 1953.
The Racers advance to Friday's 76 Classic semifinals against UNLV with an 8:30 p.m. central time tip on ESPNU. The Rebels advanced after an 80-71 win over Tulsa.
“It was a good win and I liked the way our seniors stepped,” MSU Head Coach Billy Kennedy said. “I thought they had good poise, and composure and that was what we were missing some days in practice and in the last game.”
Leading by as many as 14 in the first half and then 29-18 at halftime, the Racers made all the plays they had to make to get a win on Thanksgiving Day.
Stanford made a run and cut the MSU lead to 49-44 with 44.6 seconds remaining.
The lead went down to four when Jeremy Green hit a three-pointer with 25.1 left.
The Racers did a great defensive job on the Cardinal leading scorer holding him to nine points when he was averaging 14.7 points per game.
B.J. Jenkins and Isaiah Canaan each hit a pair from the line to seal the win, as Green hit a fruitless three with 1.4 left.
The Racers went up against a taller and longer team in Stanford, yet still won the rebound battle 29-28.
“We outrebounded them but it came from every position,” Kennedy said. “Our guards rebounded for us and our front line people had four or five each. That was big for us and we're going to have to continue to rebound like that.”
“We feel pretty good about the win, we played pretty good tonight,” MSU senior Jeffery McClain said. “The most important thing is we have to bounce back tomorrow and we have to bring the same energy.”
Eight different MSU players scored and were led by the only one in double-figures, B.J. Jenkins who had 15.
The Racers' defense was again excellent in holding Stanford to 41 percent shooting (19-46), while forcing the Cardinal into 18 turnovers and collecting six steals.
From the outset of the game, the Racers quickly showed that they were ready to play when Ivan Aska scored and Jenkins answered with a three-point play for a 5-0 MSU lead only two minutes into the contest.
MSU increased their lead to 11 points when Donte Poole made a steal and dunk and the Racers led the Cardinal 17-6 with 8:20 before the half.
MSU's lead grew to 14 at 24-10 on another steal and layup by Isacc Miles at the 6:06 mark.
