Murray State junior running back Mike Harris rushed for 198 of his career-high 242 yards in the first half as the Racers won their third-straight home game with a 44-13 victory over Tennessee Tech Saturday afternoon at 'The Track.'
MSU (4-5, 3-3 OVC) took the opening kickoff and marched down the field as Casey Brockman completed four-straight passes that moved the ball near midfield. Mike Harris picked up 19 yards on the ground and Brockman ran for 14 to convert a third down. The Racers drove inside the 10-yard line before facing a fourth down. TTU was called for too many men on the field and the Racers offense ran back onto the field to face a 4th-and-1. Brockman faked a quarterback sneak before pitching to Mike Harris for the four-yard touchdown run. For Mike Harris, it marked the sixth-straight game he has rushed for a touchdown, tieing the school record set by Billy Blanchard in 2002.
The Racer defense helped set up the second Racer touchdown as Arlester McKinnon fell on a fumble at the MSU 41. On the first play, Brockman went deep to a wide open Marcus Harris for a 59-yard touchdown.
Darrell Davis made the second big play for the Racer defense as he sacked the quarterback and forced a fumble that was recovered by Lamar Theus. Unable to get a first down, Kienan Cullen came onto the field and kicked a 37-yard field goal.
The Golden Eagles (4-5, 3-3 OVC) got on the board early in the second quarter as they put together a seven-play drive that ended with Tim Benford catching a 19-yard touchdown pass from Cass Barnes.
The Racers ran a trick play on the ensuing kickoff as Marcus Harris took the kick and threw it across the field to Hannibal Beauford who returned it to midfield. Mike Harris carried the ball for 45 yards on the next three plays to get the ball into the redzone. The drove stopped at the three yard line and Cullen booted a 20 yard field goal.
MSU made a goaline stand late in the first half as they stopped the Golden Eagles on a fourth-down play at the one yard line. Mike Harris rushed for four yards on the first play for MSU, before breaking off a 94-yard run. A penalty backed the Racers up 10 yards and MSU settled for a 21-yard Cullen field goal as the first-half clock expired.
TTU struck first in the second half as they took their opening possession as Dontey picked up a pair of first downs on the ground before Jocques went 13 yards for the touchdown. The extra point was blocked by Dontrell Johnson to keep the advantage at 22-13.
The Racers were able to add a field goal late in the third quarter as they put together a 10-play drive that covered only 20 yards. Mike Harris picked up a pair of first downs on the ground, but that was it as Cullen booted a 40-yard field goal.
Special teams stepped up for MSU in the fourth quarter as Johnson blocked a field-goal attempt and Darrian Skinner scooped the ball and ran 16 yards to the TTU 39. Dexter Durrante hauled in a pair of passes that covered 30 yards and Mike Harris went up the middle for nine yards down to the one. Duane Brady finished the drive by scoring from one-yard out.
The MSU offense had one last drive in them that covered 93 yards and put the game away. Brockman hit Marcus Harris for 12 yards and a first down, before the duo hooked up a couple plays later for 33 more yards. Brady with a pair of runs that covered 27 yards and Mike Harris gained 20 yards to take the ball to the one. On third down, Brockman rolled right and hit Dexter Barnett in the back of the endzone for the touchdown.
The most exciting play of the game came on the final play as walk-on Jesurun Kelly stepped on the field for the first time in his career and intercepted a pass. He was not done there as he weaved his way down the field and found his way into the endzone for the 77-yard touchdown.
The Racers finished the game with 300 yards on the ground. It marked the first time since Sept. 16, 2006, against Indiana State, the Racers have rushed for 300 yards in a game. Harris' 242 yards were the fifth most yards in a single game and make him just the third Racer to over 200 yards twice in one season. Derrick Cullors did it three times in 1995, while George Greenfield accomplished it twice in 1972.
Mike Harris also needs just 120 yards to become the 10th Racer to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in a season.
Marcus Harris continued his strong season as he had eight catches for 126 yards and a touchdown. He raised his career total to 2,196 yards and is within 200 yards of becoming the school's all-time leader in receiving yards.
On defense, Nathan Brinkley led the way with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery. Johnson added 10 tackles, three pass breakups and two blocked kicks. Darrell Davis, Jordan Sklba and Matt Johnson each forced a fumble.
The Racers return to action next Saturday as they travel to face Austin Peay. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Governors Stadium.
