The Murray State Rifle squad turned in another good performance Sunday when they took on West Virginia in Morgantown, W. Va.
In a battle of top-10 teams, the Racers won the air rifle portion of the competition 2355-2347, but lost the match 4675-4661.
The Mountaineers won the smallbore competition 2328-2306, but overall the Racers again went shoulder-to-shoulder with one of the best in the nation and gave a good account of themselves.
Recent performances by the MSU team bodes well for the rest of the 2010-11 season.
“This weekend concludes a very important stretch for Murray State Rifle,” MSU Head Coach Alan Lollar said. “Over the last three weeks we competed against three of the top four teams in the country and a tough Army team. We defeated Army and were within reach of Kentucky, TCU and West Virginia.”
MSU's scores in smallbore came from, Emily Quiner (586), Kaitlin Cleven (579), Ashley Rose (571), Nehemiah Gillman (570) and Kyle Donnan (563).
In air rifle, MSU's scores included: Cleven (596), Gillman (587), with Quiner and Donnan (586), and Caroline Barber (585).
Cleven's 596 in air rifle was a MSU record and Quiner's 586 in smallbore was one point off a program mark.
“Katie and Emily had great matches, 1175 and 1172 respectively,” Lollar said. “One of our goals is to raise our level of performance to the level that we have a chance with anyone. Over the past three weeks, we have made a big step toward that goal. There is always work to do, but this is a good start.”
“We had some great all around team efforts,” Lollar added. “That's our strength right now, everyone pulling together in the same direction. Consistency and effort are what have gotten us here and they will carry us on our next step.”
The Racers' next challenge is the Gamecock Invitational (Nov. 20) in Jacksonville, Ala., which will end the fall portion of the 2010-11 season.
