Scouting Morehead State
The Eagles are 5-3 overall and 1-0 in OVC play after earning a 103-82 win over UT Martin (Dec. 2). Morehead led from start to finish in a game that had a combined total of 78 free throws attempted.
Ashar Harris and Chynna Bozeman lead the Eagles in scoring and rebounding. Harris is averaging a double-double on the season, with 14.1 points and 10.6 boards per game. She is shooting 48.9 percent from the field and is also averaging 2.4 steals per game. Bozeman, is netting 16.3 points per game and has tallied 25 steals and 22 assists.
Morehead has a good shooting percentage as a team, at 36.0 from the field. However, the team is allowing its opponents to shoot at a 44.0 percentage. Three point shots have not been as strong for the Eagles this season as they were last year. In 2009-10 Morehead averaged 9.3 triples per game, but this season they are only making 5.3 per game and making only 23.9 percent of the ones they attempt.
Despite having a winning season, the Eagles are being out-scored by 3.6 points per game and out-rebounded by 2.0 board per game. Morehead also had a disadvantage in the blocks column, with the Eagles blocking 2.1 shots per game, but having 4.6 swatted away.
The second period has seen a lot more scoring for both Morehead and its opponents. The Eagles have tallied 68 more points in the second stanza, but has allowed 97 more to be scored by their opponents.
Against the Eagles
In 2009-10 the Racers and Morehead met on three occasions, including the final two games of the season for Murray State. The Eagles earned victories in all three meetings, with no game being decided by more than seven points.
Then-sophomore Kayla Lowe played the final two games of the series and had outstanding performances for the Racers. The Pikeville, Ky., native averaged 21.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 57.7 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from three-point range. Lowe had 43 points in two-consecutive games, including a career-high 28 points in the OVC Quarterfinal game. Then-sophomore Rachael Isom averaged 6.7 points per game and 3.7 rebounds as the other key returner for the Racers.
Murray State had a slight advantage in shooting, at 39.7 from the field and 36.8 percent from beyond the arc, while Morehead shot 39.4 overall and 33.3 percent from three-point range. Free throws were a big part of the series, with the Eagles making more free throws than the Racers attempted. Morehead made 45-of-58 shots from the charity stripe, while Murray State made 26-of-39. The Eagles also had a 44.7 to 34.7 rebounding advantage.
The top returners for Morehead are Chynna Bozeman, Courtney Lumpkin and Ashar Harris. Bozeman averaged 25 points per game and shot 49.0 percent from the field, 47.6 percent from beyond the arc, and 81.0 percent from the free-throw line. Lumpkin added 15 points and 4.7 rebounds, while Harris contributed eight points and 11 boards.
The Series
The Eagles currently have a 39-35 advantage in the all-time series after claiming the last three games and four of the last five. The Racers won the previous five, making it a tie series in the last 10 meetings. Each team has an advantage at home, with Morehead's standing at 22-13.
Robinson Highlight Night
The opening night of OVC action saw sophomore Mariah Robinson making a personal highlight reel. The Beaver Dam, Ky., native tallied a season-best 21 points, including 17 in the first half of action. She also added five rebounds, two assists, and a season-high three steals.
Karst Chiming In
Freshman Allison Karst has had a few good games for the Racers this season and made her presence know among the league in her first conference game. Karst tallied nine points, a season-best two steals, an assists, and two rebounds while not committing a turnover.
Lowe Double-Double
Junior Kayla Lowe had a strong performance for the Racers against Evansville. Not only did the Pikeville, Ky., native tally a career-high 10 rebounds, but she also recorded her first career double-double after adding 11 points. Lowe's previous high in the rebounding column was eight, set against Morehead State last season in the first round of the OVC Championship (March 2).
On the Road Again
MSU is on a seven game road trip that accounts for the third-longest road trip in school history. The Racers have been on the road for seven-straight games in six previous season, with the most recent being the 1990-00 campaign. The longest road trip in school history is 11 games during the 1996-97 season. MSU has also been on the road for nine-straight games (1988-89).
Continuing Streaks
Four members of the MSU team that returned from the 2009-10 season have continued streaks that they started a year ago. Junior Rachael Isom has been a key force for the Racers since last season, scoring at least one point in 42 straight games, recording a rebound in 21, adding an assist in 11 and has started the last 37 games. Fellow junior Kayla Lowe has started the last 16 games and junior Mallory Schwab has a rebound in the last 15. Sophomore Mariah Robinson in the final returner with a streak, tallying a rebound in the last 21 games.
Jessica Jumping Right In
Redshirt-freshman Jessica Winfrey wasted no time making a name for herself with the Racers. The Marion, Ark., native may have sat out the 2009-10 campaign, but immediately earned a starting role in 2010-11. She is averaging 9.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, 0.1 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.6 blocks per game for MSU. She has scored at least one point and garnered a rebound in every game so far this season.
No Senior Leadership
After fighting through an injury plagued year in 2009-10 the Murray State women's basketball team will be in a select group of NCAA DI teams this season that will allow them to use the drive and determination they discovered last year, as the roster has no seniors listed. The Racers are one of seven programs in the country with no seniors on the 2010-11 roster, a list which includes MSU opponent Purdue.
The youthful roster has just nine years of NCAA collegiate experience on it, which ranks third among OVC teams for the least amount of NCAA collegiate experience. The only teams with fewer years of experience than the Racers are UT Martin (3) and Eastern Illinois (8).
New Season New Name
Murray State University's Regional Special Events Center (RSEC) will now be known as the CFSB Center, thanks to the largest gift in Murray State athletics history. CFSB (Community Financial Services Bank) donated $3.3 million to MSU's athletic program securing naming rights of the facility.
Mahurin Signs for 2011-12
Beth Mahurin, a 6-4 post player from Rockville High School in Rockville, Ind., will join the Racers starting in the 2011-12 campaign after signing during the early signing period.
Mahurin is a top scorer, rebounder and defender for the Rox. As a junior she averaged 17 points, 15 rebounds (third in the state), six blocks (first in the state) and a field goal percentage of 63. She is the top returning player in the state of Indiana in rebounds and blocks. Her 63.0 shooting percentage was third among Indiana players in 2009-10 and her 17 points per game rank her 13th among returners for Indiana.
During her junior season Mahurin was named the Indiana Fever Player of the Week following a 34 point, 24 rebound, and eight block performance. The two-time All- Wabash River Conference selection is also a standout in the classroom and is an honor roll student.
Mahurin had a very productive junior season that led her to being named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Junior All-State team and was a member of the Indiana Class All-Star 3/4A game participant. She was named a Pre-Season Hoosier Basketball Magazine All-State second team member as a junior and was recently elevated to the Pre-Season Hoosier Basketball Magazine All-State first team for her senior season as well as being a McDonald's All-American nominee.
OVC Tournament Changes
This year the OVC Tournament will all be contested at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., from March 2-5. This is the first season that the conference will bring all eight teams to one venue for the entire tournament, as in the past the first-round games have been played on campus sites.
