The Murray State Racers dropped a 75-65 loss to Morehead State Saturday in their second game of the Ohio Valley Conference season at Johnson Arena in Morehead, Ky.
The Racers fell to 1-1 in the OVC, while the Eagles moved to 2-0.
“Give Morehead credit, every time we made a run, they made a shot,” MSU Head Coach Billy Kennedy said.
Trailing by as many as 14 points in the second half, the Racers made several pushes but could never catch the Eagles.
MSU (4-4) cut the lead to 60-54 with 5:20 remaining on a pair of free throws from B.J. Jenkins, but Morehead answered getting a three-pointer from Terrance Hill. At the 2:18 mark, Jenkins made a four-point play when he was fouled making a three to cut the lead to four, but Demonte Harper answered with a three and MSU never got any closer.
“We had chances tonight, but we just didn't get it done,” Kennedy said. “We've had long droughts in scoring in the past, but the difference was we played great defense. Right now we're not, but we're going to get better defensively. I take responsibility.”
The Racers looked to be rolling when they grabbed a 24-19 lead at 4:21 in the opening half on a three-pointer by Isaiah Canaan who had a team-best 17 points. However, Morehead tied it and then took the lead with a late three 31-28 at the break.
After Canaan's 17 points, MSU got 12 from Isacc Miles and 11 from B.J. Jenkins.
The Eagles were led by 22 points from Harper and 21 from Kenneth Faried.
MSU was plagued by 19 turnovers on the night, and saw the Eagles shoot nearly 60 percent for the game and 63 percent in the second half.
The Racers had their best shooting night of the season in their seven games against D-I teams at 50 percent.
MSU now has final exams coming up next week before they play Saturday at Chattanooga at 2 p.m. central time at McKenzie Arena. The game will air on the Racer TV Network which is a free service to NewWave Communications, Mediacom and Comcast subscribers.
Racer Radio on Froggy 103.7 FM will also air the game and free audio can be found on GoRacers.com.
MSU's next home games are Dec. 15 against Bethel and Dec. 18 against Western Kentucky.
