The Murray State men's basketball program received the Ohio Valley Conference Team Academic Achievement Award trophy before they hosted Southeast Missouri State Feb. 16 at the Regional Special Events Center.
The Racers were named the top academic team in their sport among conference members for the 2008-09 school year as co-winners with Austin Peay.
OVC Commissioner Beth DeBauche was on hand to present the award to Racers head coach Billy Kennedy.
"I am very proud of the success our players are having in the classroom," Kennedy said. "Our team worked very hard and Matt Kelly and his support team are doing a great job. "
Murray State's commitment to making sure that the student in student-athlete comes first is line with the ideals fostered in the wide array of awards given by the OVC. In addition to the team awards, the OVC also gives recognition by the OVC Medal of Honor, Scholar Athlete Award and the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll.
The OVC gives the Team Academic Achievement Awards and the end of each school year and are awarded to the member institution's team with the greatest percentage of its student-athletes named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll. The Racers placed three players on the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2008-09: Tyler Holloway, Jarad Key and Picasso Simmons.
