Murray State's Isaiah Canaan was named to the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Freshman All-America Team after a stellar first season with the Racers in which he helped lead the squad to a victory in the NCAA Tournament.
Canaan, from Biloxi, Miss., appeared in all 36 games and scored in double-figures in 19 times with a scoring average of 10.4 per game.
He was the best three-point shooter for the Racers with a .482 success rate (54-of-112) and had a streak of 17 consecutive games in which he made at least one three-point basket. The streak started in the second game of the season and he shot .489 during the period of Nov. 14 through Jan. 16 (23-of-47).
Canaan scored a career-high 22 points against Eastern Kentucky (Feb. 27) when he was 5-of-6 from three-point range and ended the season playing 20.4 minutes per game with 373 points, 56 assists and 31 steals.
Canaan was named OVC Freshman of the Year, won three OVC Freshman of the Week honors, named to the All-OVC Newcomer Team and was the MVP of the OVC Tournament.
He also made news Feb. 16 against Southeast Missouri State, the night the Racers clinched their 21st regular season OVC championship, when he made a shot from mid-court from one knee. The clip has been viewed more than two million times on YouTube.com.
This marks the second straight season a Murray State student-athlete has been named to the CollegeInsider.com list. Ivan Aska, OVC Freshman of the Year in 2009, was also on the All-America list after last season.
The Racers had a memorable 2009-10 season in which they won a school and league record 31 games, had a 17-game win streak that was the longest in the nation when it ended, and won the OVC regular season title for the 21st time. MSU won the OVC Tournament and made their 14th trip to the NCAA Tournament where they defeated Vanderbilt in the first round before falling to Butler in the second round.
CollegeInsider.com made a change this year in their All-American list and named one team of 20 players instead of breaking it up into four teams. NCAA D-I coaches and NBA scouts are part of the selection process, but final decision rests with the collegeinsider.com staff.
Here is the list of the 2009-10 team as presented by CollegeInsider.com in alphabetical order.
