Box Score
Murray State second baseman Kyle Tiernan delivered a two-run home run to right field in the top of the eighth inning to complete an improbable comeback as the Breds defeated OVC-leader Southeast Missouri, 5-3, in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Capaha Field.
Cory Hodskins kept the eighth inning alive as he doubled down the left-field line. Two pitchers later, Tiernan turned on a inside pitch and belted the game winner, the second of the season for the senior.
The Breds (20-21, 7-5 OVC) got on the board in the first inning as Zach Noonan walked, Brandon Elliott singled to center and Wes Cunningham walked on four pitches. With one out, Jason Laws drove in two runs with a single back up the middle.
The Redhawks (26-16, 10-5 OVC) got on the board in the third inning as Kenton Parmley hit a solo home run to right field.
SEMO took their first lead of the game in the fifth as they pushed across two runs without the virtue of a base hit. A hit batter and a pair of walks loaded the bases with no outs. MSU reliever Matt McGaha entered the game and got a grounder to short from Jim Klocke to drive in a run, but the throw to first was thrown in the dirt to keep the bases loaded. Casey Jones hit a sacrifice fly to center, before McGaha struck out the next two hitters to get out of the inning.
MSU tied the game in the top of the seventh as Cunningham hit a solo home run on a 2-2 pitch with two outs over the wall in right center. The homer was the 16th of the season, tying him with Daniel Hill (2009), Gary Blaine (1984) and Clay Boone (1981) for the all-time single-season record.
McGaha (3-1) continued his outstanding senior season as he did not allow a hit over four innings to earn the victory. Shae Simmons (3-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits over one inning.
The Redhawks entered the game as one of the top hitting teams in the country, but only managed three hits in the game. Breds starter Chris Craycraft only allowed three hits in his four innings of work.
The Breds and Redhawks will play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
