Breds Can't Overcome Second Inning in Series Opener at Tech

Tennessee Tech scored seven runs in the second inning and Murray State was never ever to recover as the Golden Eagles handed the Breds a 15-8 defeat in the first game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Bush Stadium.
The Breds (25-24-1, 12-6-1 OVC) got on the board in the second inning as Jason Laws singled through the left side and went to third on Colton Moore's single to left center. A wild pitch with Cory Hodskins at the plate scored Laws from third.
The Golden Eagles (27-23, 12-6 OVC) responded in a major way in the bottom half of the inning as they pushed across seven runs after the first two hitters were retired. A single to center and a pair of walks loaded the bases. Austin Wulf plated two runners with a single through the right side. Two batters later, A.J. Kirby-Jones delivered a two-run single up the middle and Chad Oberacker followed with a three-run homer to right center.
MSU got one run back in the fourth as Bryan Propst was hit by a pitch and went to second on Moore's single through the left side. With two outs, Jonathan Craycraft plated Propst with a single through the right side.
TTU answered back with the long ball in the home-half of the inning as Kirby-Jones and Oberacker hit back-to-back solo home runs with one out. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with two outs for Frankie Beech who beat out a slow roller to third for an RBI. Wulf followed by plating two runs with a bloop single to left center.
The Breds were able to get three runs on the board in the fifth as Brandon Elliott singled through the left side and scored on Wes Cunningham's two-run shot to right center, his team-leading 19th of the season and school-record 229th hit of his career. Propst followed with his 11th home run to right center.
TTU added a run in the sixth as a walk and a single put two runners on with two outs and Rivers delivered a run-scoring single to center field.
The lead grew again in the sixth as a pair of fielding errors by the Breds put two runners on and Oberacker followed with an RBI single through the right side.
In the seventh, Rivers hit the first pitch of the inning over the fence in left field.
The Breds got on the board again in the ninth as a fielder's choice, followed by a Moore double to left center and a walk by the pinch hitter Daniel Hill loaded the bases. Jonathan Craycraft was hit by a pitch to plate one run and Elliot Frey scored another with a fielder's choice to third. Brandon Elliott plated the final run of the game with a bases loaded base on balls.
Adam Liberatore (6-4) earned the victory after allowing five runs on nine hits and seven strikeouts over seven innings. Chris Craycraft (6-4) took the loss after allowing nine runs on seven hits and four walks over 3.1 innings.
Moore led the offense with three hits, while Elliott, Propst, Laws and Jonathan Craycraft each collected two hits.
The two teams will play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
