Tennessee Tech finalized any hope for Murray State to win the 2010 OVC championship as the Golden Eagles completed the doubleheader sweep with an 8-3 victory Friday afternoon at Bush Stadium.
The Breds (25-25-1, 12-7-1 OVC) got on the board in the first inning as Wes Cunningham hit the first pitch he saw off the scoreboard in right field.
The Golden Eagles (28-23, 13-6) answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning without the virtue of a base hit. A hit batter and a walk were followed by a wild pitch. A.J. Kirby-Jones and Chad Oberacker each drove in runs with groundouts to the right side.
TTU added to the lead in the second as infield single was followed by a comebacker to the mound that was thrown into center field to put runners on the corners. A walk loaded the bases, before Austin Wulf plated two runs with a single up the middle and Tate McMillan delivered a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Golden Eagles took advantage of a short power alley in right center to add a run in the third on Ben Burgess' solo home run.
MSU got one run back in the fourth on Bryan Propst's solo home run to straight-away center field.
The Breds added on more run in the sixth as Cory Hodskins walked and went to second on a wild pitch. After moving to third on a flyout to right, Propst drove in the runner with a single to left field.
TTU put the game away in the sixth on a Wulf double just inside the third-base line and a Tate McMillan bloop single into left center.
Lee Henry (6-3) picked up the complete-game victory after allowing three runs on three hits and six strikeouts over seven innings. Jake Donze (5-6) took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on one hit and four walks over one-plus inning.
Matt McGaha entered the game in the second inning and limited the Tech offense to three runs as he tied his season-high in throwing five innings. He did not walk a batter and fanned five.
Propst led the offense by going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.
The two teams close out the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. The Breds need a victory and a loss from Jacksonville State to clinch the No. 2 seed and secure a first-round by in next weeks OVC Tournament in Jackson, Tenn.
