Racer Basketball Looking Forward To 2010-11 season.
With the memory of a 31-win season that included a win in the NCAA Tournament, Murray State men's basketball coach Billy Kennedy knows the next go-around is almost here and it's time to put that great 2009-10 season in the past and look forward to the 2010-11 season.
“I'm home for a day before going out on the road again, I've been in Indianapolis and Baton Rouge recruiting,” Kennedy said during a few rare hours when he has been able to do some office catch-up. “We've been evaluating players at summer tournaments and looking for the guys we'll sign in the fall. So we're finishing out July and getting ready for another year.”
No doubt about how last season will be remembered; It will go down as one of the best all-time in the program. The Racers won a school and Ohio Valley Conference record 31 games, had the nation's longest winning streak in the middle, and capped it all off with the league regular season and tournament title. MSU then gained tremendous national attention when they defeated Vanderbilt in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament before bowing out to eventual national runner-up Butler in a two-point loss.
“That's what we're trying to do is put last season behind and try and do it again,” Kennedy said. “That's what we're here to do, we've been really gearing up, and so the enjoyment time (of last season) is over.”
July is a big month for college basketball, because not only is the coaching staff recruiting, the current Racer team including newcomers are on campus for classes and off-season conditioning.
“All of our guys are here including our five newcomers,” Kennedy said. “They've completed about a week of classes and workouts.”
“We don't want them to go three or four months without doing anything,” Kennedy added. “July brings the opportunity to bring in the new guys and get them acclimated to the team and campus, plus get them ahead academically. It has been good for us, we're excited to have all 13 guys on campus. They're all doing well and are healthy, so that's a good thing.”
In 2010-11, the Racers have a class of four seniors including, Isacc Miles, B.J. Jenkins, Jeffery McClain and Picasso Simmons. MSU's returning junior class includes, Ivan Aska, Jewuan Long and Donte Poole. Isaiah Canaan, Ed Daniel and Jordan Burge are MSU's returning sophomores.
MSU's newcomers include, freshmen Chris Griffin (Live Oak, Fla.) from Melody Christian Academy and Shawn Jackson (Tallahassee, Fla.) from Leon High School. Brandon Garrett (Phoenix, Ariz.) joins the team and will be a sophomore out of Indian Hills CC while Jeff Reese (Laurel Hill, Fla.) is a junior coming from Gulf Coast CC. Latreze Mushatt (Saginaw, Mich.) is a transfer from UMKC and will sit out the coming season and be eligible to play in the 2011-12 season.
