Murray State Announces 2010-11 Men's Basketball Schedule

76 CLASSIC OFFICIAL SITE
The Murray State Men's Basketball program released its 2010-11 schedule featuring 16 regular-season games at the Regional Special Events Center, which includes games against Western Kentucky and East Tennessee State. The Racers are also part of the prestigious 76 Classic during Thanksgiving week.
“We're excited about this season's schedule,” MSU Head Coach Billy Kennedy said. “The fact that we have eight returning players gives us a lot of confidence as we get ready for the 2010-11 season. This is a tough schedule, it doesn't have any easy D-I teams on it.”
The Racers have one of the best home-court advantages in all of college basketball and will start the 2010-11 season with a 19-game winning streak at home, the third-best in the nation. MSU starts its 13th season of hoops in the RSEC with an all-time winning percentage of .853 (146-25).
After a Nov. 9 exhibition game with Freed-Hardeman at the RSEC, the Racers open the season at home Nov. 15 against East Tennessee State. The Racers have won every home opener since 1989, a string of 19-straight games. MSU is 12-0 in home openers in the RSEC since the building opened in 1998.
The Racers travel to Ole Miss Nov. 17, then return home to play Reinhardt Nov. 20. The Rebels are coming off a 24-win season that saw them advance to the semifinals of the National Invitational Tournament. MSU and Ole Miss will be meeting for the fifth time and the first since a Murray State win at Racer Arena in 1993.
MSU has accepted an invitation to play in the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif., and will play games at the Anaheim Convention Center with the first on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 25). MSU also has games in the event Nov. 26 and 28. Pairings for the tournament will be announced later.
The 76 Classic field is a who's who of college basketball featuring three teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament last spring, including the Racers, Oklahoma State and UNLV. Tulsa and Virginia Tech made runs in the NIT and the field is rounded out with Cal-Northridge, DePaul and Stanford.
“The opportunity to play in the 76 Classic is big for the Murray State program,” Kennedy said. “This event helps keep MSU Basketball at a national level and affords us the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams in the country on national television.”
Kennedy added, “I feel our team is mature and experienced enough to handle the tough games we'll play in Anaheim and the early start to our Ohio Valley Conference season.”
December finds the Racers opening the OVC regular season and going for back-to-back titles when they make the trip to Eastern Kentucky (Dec. 2) and Morehead State (Dec. 4), before playing a non-OVC game at Chattanooga (Dec. 11). The Racers defeated the Mocs at home last season and will meet them for the eighth time.
MSU returns home for a pair of games starting Dec. 15 against Bethel and Dec. 18 against rival Western Kentucky. The Racers-Hilltoppers rivalry is one of the best in the game, dating back to 1932 and spanning 147 games.
The Racers' final game before Christmas is Dec. 21 at OVC foe UT Martin, before hosting future OVC opponent SIU Edwardsville in the final game of 2010 on Dec. 30. The Cougars are an incoming league member and play a full OVC schedule in the 2011-12 season.
The new year finds the Racers returning to league play with a pair of home games Jan. 6 against Tennessee State and Jan. 8 versus Austin Peay.
MSU's remaining games in January include road games at Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech (Jan. 13 and 15), home games against Eastern Illinois and Southeast Missouri (Jan. 20 and 22), a road game with SIUE (Jan. 26) and a home contest with UTM (Jan. 29).
February's schedule starts with games at TSU and APSU (Feb. 3 and 5), before home games with TTU and JSU (Feb. 10 and 12).
The Racers play at SEMO Feb. 16, before hosting the ESPNU BracketBusters game against an opponent to be announced later.
The regular season ends with games at home against Morehead State and EKU (Feb. 24 and 26).
The Racers, the reigning OVC Tournament champions, will try for another at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., March 1-5, 2011, when the league brings eight teams to one venue for the entire event. Previously, first round games were played on campus sites with the semifinals and finals being held in Nashville. The bracket goes to a merit-based format that rewards the top teams in the regular season with byes into the quarterfinals and semifinals.
One of the story lines to keep an eye on during the season is the Racers quest for another winning season. MSU's streak is 23 after the 2009-10 season, tied for fourth with Connecticut. Syracuse is the leader at 40, while second place belongs to Kansas with 27, and third place is Arizona with 26.
Several MSU games will again be televised this season by ESPN, The Racer Television Network and MSU TV-11. Those dates will be announced later.
