Racers Fall to Evansville, 0-3

Junior Logan Su earned UE Dunn Hospitality All-Tournament Team honors after leading the Racers (3-7) in the three-match tournament, with 46 kills and a .309 (46k-8e-123ta) hitting percentage. The A La Shan Zuo Qui, Inner Mongolia, China native led MSU against the Purple Aces (9-1) with 15 kills and a .244 (15k-4e-45ta) hitting percentage. Senior Becca Lamb paced the team in hitting percentage, with a .269 (9k-2e-26ta) mark against Evansville.
Defensively the team was led by junior Kayleah Sauer and sophomore Lydia Orf. Sauer tallied 15 digs, while Orf added 11.
The Racers earned the first two points of the match, but the Purple Aces quickly countered and went on an 8-1 run to take control of the set for good. Evansville pushed the tempo of the match and led by as many as 10 points and never let MSU get more than three points in-a-row on the way to a 15-25 win.
In the second set, the Racers took and early 5-1 advantage and pushed their lead to as many as seven points before the Purple Aces started a come-back. MSU was up 17-10 when an Evansville 6-0 run cut the lead to one. The Racers countered with a 4-1 run to increase the lead back to four points, but the Purple Aces kept fighting and used a 6-1 run late in the set to take a 23-24 advantage. MSU tied the set at 24, but Evansville rallied to earn the 24-26 win.
The Purple Aces kept the momentum going in the start of the third set, as they opened with a 5-1 run. The teams then traded serves for the remainder of the set, with a few small runs by Evansville. The Purple Aces kept control of the set and never let the Racers get closer than four points on the scoreboard on the way to a 17-25 victory.
After having the best hitting performance of the season against Western Carolina earlier in the day, the Racers struggled to find their grove and hit just .197 (40k-15e-127ta). The Purple Aces were strong at the net, hitting .276 (47k-13e-123ta). MSU was also out-blocked 4-8.
The Racers will end their 12-match road trip next weekend with the start of Ohio Valley Conference season. MSU plays its first league match against Austin Peay, Friday, Sep. 17 at 7 p.m. and then travel to face Tennessee State, Saturday, Sep. 18 at 2 p.m.
Notes: Senior Becca Lamb in now just 64 kills away from joining the 1,000 Kill Club at MSU…she started the season needing 157 and has knocked off 93 from that total in the first 10 matches of the season.
