Racers Set to Open OVC Action on the Road

The Murray State volleyball team will be on the road one more weekend before playing its first match of the season at Racer Arena. This weekend the Racers also begin Ohio Valley Conference action, with matches against Austin Peay (Sep. 17 - 7 p.m.) and Tennessee State (Sep. 18 - 2 p.m.).
Scouting Austin Peay
The Lady Govs will open the home portion of their season after going 9-1 in their opening tournaments. APSU has been victorious in its last eight matches.
The Lady Govs have a strong overall attack, but two hitters stand out, with over 350 attempts each, while the next on the attack list has 197 attempts. Nikki Doyle has a .212 hitting percentage (126k-49e-363ta) and Ilyanna Hernandez is hitting .219 (116k-39e-352ta). Doyle and Hernadez are also a key part in APSU's No. 7 rating in the NCAA for service aces per set (2.2). The duo have 12 and 17, respectively, while Kayla Grantham and Taylor Skinner have each contributed 13 and Paige Economos has 11.
As a team, the Lady Govs have a .244 (481k-167e-1287ta) hitting percentage and have held their opponents to a .159 (384k-192e-1206ta) mark. APSU is strong all around, with all but four members of the team have double-digit dig totals. Economos leads the team with 159 digs.
Against the Lady Govs
The Racers and APSU split the 2009 series, with each team winning on their home courts. The box scores were pretty even in the matches, with MSU earning an advantage in the hitting percentage column (.235/.220) and the Lady Govs out serving the Racers (3.1 service aces per set to 1.3).
Four hitters for MSU hit over .200, with then-junior Becca Lamb leading the way with a .326 (20k-5e-46ta) mark. Ashley Nenninger hit .233 (21k-7e-60ta), Mary Cunningham added a .229 (14k-6e-35ta) mark and Logan Su netted a .211 (26k-11e-71ta) hitting percentage against APSU.
The Lady Govs return two of their top performers against the Racers from a season ago, but lost their key performer in Stephanie Champine. Champine has tallied the most kills against MSU (33) and also tallied five service aces. Taylor Skinner and Jessica Mollman return for the 2010 campaign after both hit over .400 against the Racers. Skinner hit .423 (12k-1e-26ta), while Mollman added a .409 (11k-2e-22ta) mark. The top server against MSU returns in Kayla Grantham, who garnered six service aces against the Racers.

The all-time series with the Lady Govs is one of the closest among OVC opponents. MSU currently leads 31-28, after winning seven of the last eight matches. APSU currently holds a slight advantage when playing in the Dunn Center, at 11-13.
Scouting Tennessee State
The Tigers are currently 2-6 after winning their first matches of the season last weekend. TSU lost the first six matches of the season, winning only one set is those matches, before defeating Air Force (3-0) and LaSalle (3-1).
The Tigers have struggled to find their hitting stride this season, as the team has combined for a .116 (264k-162e-876ta) hitting percentage. Only two players on the team have an attack percentage above .200. TSU's opponents have a .227 hitting percentage of the season and are leading by small amounts in all other statistical categories on the score sheet.
Danielle Howell and Vicmari Prospero are the only two players with a hitting percentage above .200, with Howell hitting .271 (37k-14e-85ta) and Propero adding a .266 (53k-20ta-124ta) mark. The other go-to hitters for the Tigers are Shantia Sanders and Shaquita Williams. Sanders has seen most of the sets, with 208 attempts and is first on the team in kills 58, but she has a .115 hitting percentage. Williams is hitting just .095 (50k-36e-148ta).
Prospero, Williams and Sanders are strong at the service line and at the net. The trio has 11, nine and eight aces, and 19, 15 and 11 blocks, respectively.
Against the Tigers
In 2009, the Racers earned two wins over TSU and combined for a .364 hitting percentage, while holding the Tigers to a .190 mark.
Then-junior Sara Hayden led the team with a .625 hitting mark (17k-2e-24ta) against the Tigers, while Mary Cunningham and Becca Lamb both tallied percentages over .425. Cunningham hit .474 (11k-2e-19ta) and added four blocks, with Lamb contributing a .438 (15k-1e-32ta) mark.
TSU has two returning players that tallied over 10 kills against MSU last season. Prospero was the only player to produce much offense against the Racers, hitting .417 (13k-3e-24ta) and adding five blocks. Williams also tallied 15 kills, but hit just .036 (15k-13e-5ta).

MSU has a clear advantage in the all-time series, at 39-6. Five of the Tigers victories have come in the last five years, but the Racers have been the victors in the last three meetings.
All-Tournament Honors
Junior Logan Su added her name to the list of Racers to earn honors this season, as she was named to the UE Dunn Hospitality Classic All-Tournament Team. Su led the Racers in the three-match tournament, with 46 kills and a .309 (46k-8e-123ta) hitting percentage.
