The Racers (3-6) were led by senior Becca Lamb who tallied the fourth-best hitting percentage in school history for 10-14 attempts. The Highland, Ill., native hit .714 (10k-0e-14ta) and added eight digs. Lamb was joined by senior Ashley Nenninger and junior Logan Su in double-digit kill performances. Nenninger garnered 14 kills and a .393 hitting percentage, while Su added 13 kills and a .500 attack percentage.
The opening set saw the scoreboard in favor of the Catamounts (3-6) at the beginning and then the tide shifted to the Racers with a 4-0 run to toggle the lead to 13-12 for MSU. The Racers then used two small runs to keep the lead in their favor. The final push came with the score reading 18-17 for MSU, the Racers went on a 6-0 run that got them to set-point. WCU was able to hold off the loss for two serves, but Nenninger landed a kill down the line that gave MSU the 25-19 victory.
The first four points of second set were a battle, but after that it was all Racers. MSU opened up a three-point lead with a 5-0 run and then kept adding to the advantage with small runs throughout the set. The Racers held the Catamounts to no more than two points at a time on their way to the 25-14 win.
The final set was a tug-of-war for control, as the teams combined for 10 tie scores, but MSU earned the only leads larger than one point in the set. The Racers took the lead for good after an 18-all tie. MSU went on a 4-0 run and then pushed the momentum to earn the 25-22 victory.
The Racers were strong across the board, but combined for the best hitting percentage of the season at .388 (49d-11e-98ta) and only allowed the Catamounts to hit .178 (34k-16e-101ta). Part of the reason for the low opponent hitting percentage was MSU blocking, with the Racers earning a 6-3 advantage in the blocking column.
The Racers conclude the UE Dunn Hospitality Tournament against the host Purple Aces at 6 p.m. in the Carson Center.
Notes: Senior Becca Lamb in now just 73 kills away from joining the 1,000 Kill Club at MSU…she started the season needing 157 and has knocked off 84 from that total in the first nine matches of the season.
