Sophomore Shelby Kosmecki and freshman Madysen Wilton combined to throw a no-hitter in the Murray State softball team's first game of the fall season, downing Shawnee CC 15-0 before taking game two 8-0.
Kosmecki struck out four and walked one in the first three frames for the Racers while Wilton closed out the victory with four perfect innings and four strikeouts in her first collegiate action.
Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the first, freshman Meghan Sims doubled into the gap in right center to score sophomore Alaina Zloty and senior Jenna Bradley as the Racers took a quick 4-0 lead.
Senior Stephanie Mattocks added to the lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the third deep to straightaway center field. Her hit initially appeared to be just short of the fence, but the Shawnee center fielder was unable to keep the ball in her glove as it bounced over the fence.
Later in the fifth, MSU pieced together six consecutive runners reaching base to add on another five runs, including two straight walks with the bases loaded.
Junior Megan Glosser matched Sims with three hits to pace the offense in the opener. Glosser scored three times from the leadoff spot in the lineup while Sims drove in a team-high four. Freshman Ali Hart and Zloty also crossed home plate three times each.
The MSU dominance continued in the nightcap, as senior Kristen Broadway struck out eight straight batters in the first three innings to shut down the Saints. Broadway finished with four innings of one-hit ball with eight total strikeouts. Junior Chelsey Sullivan finished the day with three innings pitched, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out three.
The Racers took control right away in the bottom of the first as sophomore Ellyn Troup homered with one on to take an early 3-0 lead.
They took advantage of a pair of errors in the bottom of the second as Bradley benefitted from a dropped foul ball to double down the left field line to score junior Taylor Wilson from third. Troup followed with a single up the middle to score Bradley as the Racers went ahead 5-0.
Mattocks added her second home run of the day in the fourth inning as MSU went ahead 7-0, and she drove in the game's final run in the fifth with a single up the middle. She ended game two a perfect 3-3 from the plate with three runs batted in. Glosser and Troupe were each 3-3 batting and Troupe matched Mattocks with three RBI.
Murray State continues its fall schedule next weekend, hosting Wabash Valley CC on Sept. 26 at 1:00 p.m.
