The Murray State volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-15) victory over SIU Edwardsville in the Racers (6-8, 2-1 OVC) first home match of the 2010 campaign. The win was also the first on the new floor that was installed in Racer Arena over the summer.
MSU was led by senior Ashley Nenninger who tallied a .423 (13k-2e-26ta) hitting percentage. The Marble Hill, Mo., native was the only Racer to garner 10 or more kills, as the team spread out its offensive attack. A total of eight players recorded at least two kills for MSU in the match, with seniors Sara Hayden and Becca Lamb second on the list with seven each. Hayden added a .636 (7k-0e-11ta) hitting percentage to the mix.
The sharing of duties did not just occur in the offensive columns, but in the defensive ones as well. All but three of the 12 players that saw action in the match recorded at least one dig. Sophomore Lydia Orf led the team with 10, while freshman Katlyn Hudson added nine and juniors Kayleah Sauer and Jade Guo each came up with eight.
The Cougars (8-6) were the first team to serve in the match and started out on a bad foot, recording a service error in their first two service attempts. The Racers opened up the match with a 4-1 lead and never let SIUE get closer than one point the rest of the set. MSU used several small runs throughout the set to build its lead to as many as four on the way to a 25-20 win.
The Cougars started strong in the second set, earning an early 2-0 lead. However, the Racers quickly took the lead away, with a 3-0 run, and never looked back. MSU went on a 6-1 run that gave them a 10-6 advantage and then kept SIUE from earning more than two points in-a-row the rest of the set to earn the 25-15 victory.
The third set saw several Racers runs that helped them earn a 25-15 set and match victory. Guo helped start the runs with five-straight serves in the opening third of the set that helped MSU earn a 5-2 advantage. Hayden has two strings of severs in the set, including the final three serves of the match.
The Racers earned a clear advantage in the hitting column, recording a team hitting percentage of .365 (44k-9e-96ta) and held the Cougars to an opponent season low of .118 (31k-18e-110ta). MSU also out-dug SIUE, 50-35.
The Racers will be in action again Tuesday, Sep. 28 at Eastern Illinois. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Lantz Arena.
Notes: Senior Becca Lamb is now just 26 kills away from joining the 1,000 Kill Club at Murray State.
