MSU saw four players in double-digits in kills and digs, while junior setter Jade Guo tallied her first triple-double of the season. Guo garnered 10 kills, 51 assists and 14 digs for the Racers. Senior Becca Lamb led MSU with a .400 (16k-2e-35ta) hitting percentage, while fellow senior Ashley Nenninger added 17 kills. Junior Teresa Krog was the final member of the team with a double-digit kill performance, with 12.
Junior Kayleah Sauer led the defensive with 19 digs, while sophomore Lydia Orf added 14 and Lamb secured her third double-double of the year with 12.
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle throughout. The teams combined for 14 tie scores in the set. They traded the first 18 serves of the set before either team could take an advantage. KSU was the first to go on a run when they went up 9-15, with a 6-0 run. The Racers followed with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to one (14-15) and the battle resumed. MSU then tied the set at 22 with a couple of short runs and finished the set on a 3-0 run to earn the 25-22 victory.
The second set was all Golden Flashes, as they took the lead early and then used a 6-0 run in the middle of the set to push the advantage to as many as 11 points on way to the 14-25 win.
The third set was another back-and-forth battle with nine ties and three lead changes. KSU took a late lead, 24-22, but the Racers were not done fighting and battled back to force extra points and to win the set with a 4-0 run. The runs included kills from red-shirt freshman Wendi Zickfield and Nenninger and two attack errors by KSU.
The close match continued into the fourth set, as both teams traded several runs, but it was the Golden Flashes that earned the advantage with several three-point runs late in the set on their way to the 20-25 win that forced a fifth set.
In the final set, the Racers took the lead from the start, with a 2-0 run to open the set. MSU held the lead until the side switch when they were up 8-5. KSU then mounted a come-back and tied the set at eight, with a 3-0 run. However, the final push came from the Racers with a 3-0 run with the score tied at nine to take the lead for good. The Golden Flashes were then never able to put together more than one point in-a-row and MSU earned a 15-11 victory to take the match.
Notes: Sophomore Cassy Woolverton saw her first action of the 2010 season in the third set…a win against Cincinnati would be the first time since 2006 that MSU had gone 3-0 at a tournament…the last time was at the Kent State Invitational when they defeated Kent State, North Carolina State and Chicago State.
