Volleyball Prepares for Final Tournament of 2010 Season

The Murray State volleyball team will be participating in its final preseason tournament of the 2010 campaign when the team travels to Evansville, Ind. to play in the UE Dunn Hospitality Tournament. The Racers will first face Loyola (Chicago), Friday, Sep. 10 at 3 p.m. and then battle with Western Carolina (10 a.m.) and the host Purple Aces (6 p.m.) Saturday, Sep. 4 in the Carson Center.
Scouting Loyola (Chicago)
The Ramblers are currently 3-3 after going 2-1 at the Inntowner Invitational hosted by Wisconsin. Loyola picked up victories over Chicago State and Duquesne before falling to the host Badgers.
The Ramblers have five hitters that have seen over 90 attempts, but Colleen Francis has seen the majority of the sets, with 172 attempts. Francis has a team-best 60 kills and a .180 hitting percentage. Mallory Curran has a team-best .237 (40k-17e-97ta) attack percentage and is leading the team in blocks, with 14. Cat Languido is the leading defensive player for Loyola, with 91 digs on the season.
As a team, the Ramblers have combined for a .194 team hitting percentage, while their opponents have a .196 mark. Loyola and its opponents have similar stats throughout the score sheet, except in the blocking category. The Rambers are being out-blocked 2.3 blocks/set to 1.4.

This will be just the second meeting in school history, with the previous coming Sep. 7, 1991, with Loyola earning a 2-3 victory.
Scouting Western Carolina
The Catamounts are 3-4 after going 0-3 at the Indiana State Tournament over the weekend and picking up a five-set victory over South Carolina State Tuesday night.
WCU is struggling to get its hitters going this season, as the team has combined for a .126 hitting percentage (276k-162e-908ta). However, their opponents are not fairing much better, hitting just .167 (289k-142e-881ta) on the year.
The Catamounts have two main hitters in Paloma Alvarez and Amanda Chaparro. The duo accounts for 55 percent of the attack attempts by WCU this season, as Alvarez has attempted 270 attacks and Chaparro has 229 on the season. Alvarez leads the team in kills (77) and is second in digs (80), but has a .137 hitting percentage. Chaparro is hitting .100 and has eight service aces and 60 digs to her credit. The top blocker for the Catamounts is Carrie Minoque (18), while the top defensive player is Morgan Cochran, with 98 digs.

The Purple Aces are on a roll, having won their last four matches. Evansville won the Troy Spiketacular last weekend and added a win over UT Martin Tuesday night to move its season record to 6-1.
The Purple Aces have a .250 team hitting percentage (297k-97e-799ta), while allowing their opponents to hit just .152 (254k-132e-804ta). Blocking has become a big part of Evansville's game this season, with 46 of its opponents errors resulting from Purple Aces blocks.
Evansville has four hitters with over 100 attempts so far this season, with two standing out as the go-to players. Brooke Maher has a .290 hitting percentage this season on 72k-16e-193ta. She is also adding seven service aces and 64 digs. Emily Wandersee is next on the hitting lists, with a .333 mark (80k-21e-177ta). Guo Garnering League Honors
Junior setter Jade Guo became the first member of the MSU volleyball team to earn OVC honors during the 2010 season, as she was named the OVC Setter of the Week for Sep. 6. The DaTong, Shanxi, China native helped lead the Racers to the three best hitting percentages of the season. MSU finished the Bearcat Invitational with a .284 mark versus Cincinnati and a .257 mark for the tournament. She recorded her first triple-double of the season against Kent State with 11 kills, 14 digs and 51 assists. She tallied the third-best hitting percentage on the team with a .318 mark to go with 17 kills and 24 digs over the tournament.
Seniors Snagging Recognition
Seniors Ashley Nenninger and Becca Lamb were both named to the Bearcat Invitational All-Tournament Team. Lamb hit .365 (30k-3e-74ta) for the tournament, while adding 22 digs and four blocks. Nenninger contributed a .333 (37k-11e-78ta) hitting percentage and added seven blocks.
Making Steady Progress
The Racers ended the Wyoming Invite with a .171 team hitting percentage, but improved that mark to .208 after the Bearcat Invitational. In each match, MSU improved on its season-best hitting percentage in a match. The Racers hit .229 against James Madison, .263 against Kent State and .284 against Cincinnati. The improvement moved the team from the No. 6 spot in the conference hitting percentage column to No. 2.
Doubling-Down
Senior Becca Lamb was a consistent performer for the Racers in the Wyoming Invite. The Highland, Ill., native garnered two double-doubles over the weekend. Her first came against Northern Arizona when she tallied 10 kills and 11 digs. She added her second of the season a day later against the host Cowgirls, with 12 kills and a career-best 15 digs. Lamb tallied 32 kills and a .256 hitting percentage over the four-match tournament. Lamb added a third double-double against Kent State in the Bearcat Invitational, with 16 kills and 12 digs.
