The Murray State Racers used a 16-4 run in the late first half to build a lead that carried them to a 92-85 victory over Tennessee Tech Saturday at the Eblen Center in Cookeville, Tenn.
The win was the 200th in the 13 seasons as a head coach for MSU's Billy Kennedy and it marked his 96th win in five seasons with the Racers.
MSU grabbed a share of second place in the Ohio Valley Conference at 5-2, while improving to 12-5 overall.
After trailing early by eight points, the Racers chipped away and tied the game 24-24 with 8:33 before half and then put together a game-changing run. It started with a three-point play by Isaiah Canaan and followed by a pair of three-point baskets by B.J. Jenkins for a lead of nine. When Shawn Jackson scored just before the half for a 25-13 run, the Racers had a 49-37 lead at halftime.
MSU quickly built a 17-point lead seven minutes into the second half and held on for their 12th win of the season.
Isaiah Canaan led five MSU players in double-figures with 16, with Isacc Miles, Jewuan Long and Ivan Aska each added 14. B.J. Jenkins scored 13. Long's 14 points was his career-high.
MSU shot 55 percent for the game while Tech had the same.
The 94 points represents the season-high for MSU against an NCAA D-I squad.
NOTES
MSU now owns a 118-46 lead in the all-time series with TTU since it started in 1930. MSU is 43-37 in Cookeville and will be 69-8 when they host the Golden Eagles at the CFSB Center Feb. 10.
Isacc Miles now has four straight double-figure scoring games. Teammate Isaiah Canaan had a string of six straight against Eastern Kentucky (17 points), Morehead State (17), Chattanooga (12), Bethel (15), Western Kentucky (19) and UT Martin (12). B.J. Jenkins also had a four-game streak this season.
MSU's 92 points is a season-high against an NCAA D-I opponent topping the 74 they had at Eastern Kentucky (Dec. 2).
MSU just missed getting to the 100-point mark for the first time against a D-I team since they did it in 2003 against Chicago State.
The Racers are one of two teams in NCAA D-I that haven't had a 20-point scorer yet this season. MSU joins Jacksonville (11-3) of the Atlantic Sun Conference with that distinction.
The Racers have now won back-to-back games since their Saturday loss to Austin Peay.
Next up for the Racers is a pair of home games next week against Eastern Illinois (Jan. 20) and Southeast Missouri (Jan. 22). Both games begin at the CFSB Center at 7:30 p.m.
