It was a busy weekend for Murray State Rifle as they hosted the Roger Withrow Invitational Open in Murray, Ky.
The Racers welcomed in nine NCAA rifle teams for the annual competition at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range at Roy Stewart Stadium.
MSU won for the fifth straight time total 4656 (2312 in smallbore and 2344 in air rifle).
Jacksonville State was the runner-up at 4637, while Memphis (4614), Ohio State (4611) and Columbus State (4596) rounded out the top-five. UTEP (4584), UT Martin (4559), North Carolina State (4484), UT Martin (Women) (4448), Rose-Hulman (4410) made up the rest of the field.
“We had another good weekend and shot above our team average aggregate score,” MSU Head Coach Alan Lollar said. “Our smallbore stayed strong and air rifle is showing signs of waking up at just the right time.”
The Racers turned in two personal bests with Ashley Rose carding a 586 air rifle and Mike Burzynski had a smallbore personal best at 572.
In smallbore, MSU was led by a 582 from Emily Quiner, with Nehemiah Gillman (581), Katie Cleven (577). Kyle Donnan, Rose and Burzynski all had a 572. Other MSU scores included: Billy Harvey (571) and Caroline Barber (561)
MSU air rifle scores included: Cleven with a first place finish of 593 in a field of 61 competitors, with Rose (586), Quiner (586), Gillman (584), Donnan (581), Harvey (571), Burzynski (561) making up the rest of MSU's scores.
“Once again it was a team effort,” Lollar added. ”Everyone did their part, and that's what we are working for.”
The Racers' next challenge is the Ohio Valley Conference Championship at Jacksonville State this weekend. MSU won last season's championship, which was their xxth in the history of the program.
“The OVC is going to be a tough match,” Lollar said.” JSU will do a great job hosting the championship, and they will be ready on match day. Championships are special, anything can happen. You have to be ready and we'll only concentrate on what we can control.”
