The Murray State volleyball team lost a three-set match to the Ohio Valley Conference leader, Morehead State (23-25, 23-25, 22-25) in Racer Arena as the first match of the Racers (4-17, 4-6 OVC) annual Swinging To Eliminate Cancer fundraiser weekend.
Box Score
MSU was led in the kills column by senior Teresa Krog, who tallied 12. Sophomore Wendi Zickfield tallied a team-best .350 (9k-2e-20ta) hitting percentage, while junior Cassy Woolverton added a .333 (7k-0e-21ta) mark.
With her first dig of the match, senior Kayleah Sauer moved up to the No. 2 spot on the Racers all-time dig list, passing Kim Koehler (1,994). The Louisville, Ky., native has now recorded 2,003 making her just the second player to record over 2,000 digs and putting her just 122 out of first (2,125-Heather Norris).
The first set was a tight battle, with 11 tie scores and five lead changes. The final tie came at 21-all, but was followed by a 2-0 run by the Eagles (15-5, 10-0 OVC). The advantage was all that Morehead needed despite trading serves the rest of the set, as it earned the 25-23 win.
The second set saw five tie scores and five lead changes, but the Eagles took an early 8-5 lead that they held onto and pushed to six (14-8) in the middle of the set. The Racers didn't give up and, after being down 21-13, went on a 10-1 run to take a 23-22 advantage. However, Morehead finished the set with a 3-0 run to earn the 25-23 win.
The Racers came out fighting in the third set and took an 11-6 lead with a 6-1 run. The teams then traded serves and runs until MSU was up 17-12. That's when the Eagles started their come-back, going on a 10-5 run to tie the set at 22 and then using a 4-0 run to finish the set with a 25-22 win.
For the second match in a row, the Racers had strong blocking, recording 7.5 total blocks to Morehead's six. That was the only area on the score sheet the MSU earned an advantage.
The Racers will be in action against tomorrow as part of the annual Homecoming festivities at Murray State. MSU will host Eastern Kentucky at 8 p.m. following the football game against Eastern Illinois at 3 p.m. The match will also wrap up the annual fundraiser, Swinging To Eliminate Cancer, to raise money for Murray-Calloway County Cancer Center, in honor of Kendra Schwepker, the wife of head coach David Schwepker.
