Match Notes
Scouting Morehead State
The Eagles are the top team in the Ohio Valley Conference so far this season, with a 14-5 overall record and a perfect 9-0 mark in league action. Morehead has won its last nine matches and finished the non-conference portion of the season with a 5-5 mark.
The Eagles are a strong team all over the court, with clear statistical advantage over their opponents in all but blocking. Morehead trails its opponents 2.1 to 1.9 in blocks per set, but has the biggest advantage in hitting percentage .225 (936k-405e-2361ta) to .152 (709k-365e-2262ta). The Eagles are ranked in the top-100 in six of the seven NCAA team categories, including No. 23 and No. 24 rankings in assists and kills per set, respectively.
Morehead has two hitters that see nearly double the attempts of the other three hitters that have seen more than 200 attempts this season. Ellie Roberson is the player to watch, with a .253 (274k-112e-640ta) hitting percentage and the most attempts on the team. She ranks No. 36 in the nation with 4.15 kills per set and No. 69 in points per set (4.37). Aryn Bohannon is the other key hitter for the Eagles, with 596 attempts. Bohannon is hitting just .183 (207k-98e-596ta), but also adds 32 service aces and 186 digs. She is ranked in three NCAA statistical categories (No. 19 in Service Aces, No. 183 in Points and No. 223 in Kills).
The Series
The Eagles have a 35-26 lead in the all-time series, including victories in the last five meetings. However, the Racers are 15-9 when playing at home against Morehead State during the series.
Scouting Eastern Kentucky
The Colonels head into this weekend's matches with an 11-9 overall mark and a 6-3 record in the OVC after winning their last two matches and four of the last five.
While there is only one area on the season box score that EKU has an advantage over its opponents, they are close in most categories. The Colonels are a good serving team, with a 1.2 to 0.9 advantage in service aces per set. The category with the biggest disadvantage is hitting percentage, at .178 (955k-459e-2782ta) to .199 (1000k-443e-2799ta).
EKU has one go-to hitter and two more that see more attempts than the rest of the hitters on the team. Ashley Edmond is the player to watch, with 733 attempts, but just a .171 (248k-123e-733ta) attack percentage. Hannah Burkle is the most accurate of the hitters, with a .206 (214k-102e-544ta) hitting percentage. She also adds a team-best 59 (12-47) blocks and 12 service aces. The teams setter, Abbey Cvelbar, is leading the team with 23 service aces and adds 167 digs and a .375 (112k-22e-240ta) hitting percentage.
The Series
The all-time series with the Colonels is a tight race, with MSU holding a small 30-28 advantage after wining the last two matches. The Racers are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings and hold a 15-9 advantage in the series when playing in Racer Arena.
Swinging To Eliminate Cancer
For the fourth-straight season the Murray State volleyball team will be hosting Swinging To Eliminate Cancer, a fundraiser to help those affected by cancer. The team will be raising money to help closer to home, teaming up with Murray-Calloway County Regional Cancer Center. All the funds raised will go to the MCCRCC in honor of Kendra Schwepker, the wife of MSU head volleyball coach David Schwepker. The Racers will hold the fundraiser Oct. 14-15. Donations can be made through the weekend by talking to any volleyball player or staff member.
Volleyball Reunion
MSU Volleyball will be hosting a reunion Oct. 14-15 in Racer Arena as part of the Homecoming festivities. Saturday's events include an Alumni Match at 10:30 a.m.
Reaching for Milestones
When the MSU volleyball team stepped onto the court this season they were going for several milestones for both the team and head coach David Schwepker. The teams first win (Sep. 16, 2011) marked the 400th for the volleyball program in its 29 year history and the 125th OVC win for head coach David Schwepker. This is during his time as the head coach of the Racers and while at Tennessee State. Schwepker needs one more OVC win for his 125th conference win at MSU.
MSU will also be aiming to reach two more milestones for their head coach. Schwepker needs three overall wins for his 200th career coaching win and 16 wins to reach his 200th win while at the helm of the Racers.
Moving Up in the Career Charts
Three of the MSU players are currently on, or just shy of making, career lists in at least one category this season. Senior Mary Cunningham currently has 148 block assists, moving her into ninth on the career block assist charts at MSU. She needs five more to take over eighth (153-Katie Kemezys).
Fellow senior Kayleah Sauer is already on the Racers career digs list, currently in third place (1,993). Sauer is one from second held by Kim Koehler (1,994) and 132 from the top spot that belongs to Heather Norris (2,125). The Louisville, Ky., native has averaged 550 digs per season in her first three years. Sauer is also close to making a second top-10 list, service aces. She has 97 career service aces and the top-10 list starts at 99 and goes up to 257.
Junior Lydia Orf is also making a push to join Sauer in the 1,000 Dig Club. The St. Charles, Mo., native has recorded 744 digs and needs 256 to become the 14th member of the club.
Quick Sets
The Racers 43-41 set three loss at APSU, was close to an NCAA record for the longest set, under 25-point scoring...the record was 45-43, but it was the longest for MSU and in the OVC.
Up Next
The Racers will return to the road for weekend matches at Jacksonville State (Oct. 21) and Tennessee Tech (Oct. 22) before returning home to host Southeast Missouri (Oct. 25) at Racer Arena.
