Women’s Tennis Starts Fall Season at Steve Baras Fall Classic

The Murray State women's tennis team had a solid start to the 2011 Fall schedule at the 28th Annual Steve Baras Fall Classic hosted by UT Chattanooga, Sep. 30-Oct. 2 at Champions Courts in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Results
The Racers were among 12 schools represented on the women's side of the tournament and came out with five singles victories and two doubles wins.
Junior Ashley Canty led the way for MSU, advancing to the semifinals of the Singles Gold Flight and going 2-1 in singles play. The Powder Springs, Ga., native started the tournament by defeating Jane Hueckinghaus (Kennesaw State), the second-ranked player in the flight, (6-0, 6-1) to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals she defeated Daniella Patton (Xavier), ranked No. 3 in the flight, (1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7)) to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals, Canty was then defeated by Sara Lazarevic from Stetson (6-4, 6-4).
Sophomore Carla Suga also picked up a win in the Singles Platinum Flight Consolation round over Tamara Plocher (3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7)) from Kennesaw State. Freshman Jordana Klien went 1-2 in the Singles Gold Flight, earning a consolation win over Raphaela Lima (6-2, 6-3) from Jacksonville State. Fellow freshman Carolyn Heurth went 1-1 in the Singles Platinum Flight, defeating Tess Lagerkvist (6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (3)) from Kennesaw State.
Two doubles pairs were also in action during the tournament, with both going 1-1. Suga and Heurth combined to defeat Raisa Guasti and Raphaela Lima (JSU), 8-6, in the opening round of the Blue Doubles. Canty and Klien also won their first doubles match in the Platinum Doubles Flight. The duo earned an 8-1 win over Teresa Franco and Bruna Viera (8-1) from North Alabama.
The Racers will continue their Fall Schedule, Oct. 28-30 at the Southern Miss Tournament in Hattiesburg, Miss. The final tournament of the season for MSU, will be Nov. 12-13 when they host the Murray State Invitational at the Kenlake Tennis Center in Aurora, Ky.
