Women’s Tennis Start Spring Season on Winning Note

The Murray State women's tennis team started the 2011-12 season by earning a win over North Alabama at the Kenlake Tennis Center in Aurora, Ky. The win was also the first win for new head coach Kara Amundson in her first match at the helm of the Racers (1-0) program.
MSU started the match by earning the doubles point. Senior Ashley Pierson and freshman Jordana Klein paired at No. 3 doubles to earn the first win for the Racers (8-3) over Natalia Barragan and Teresa Franco. Senior Cassidy Cunitz and junior Ashley Canty then secured the point for the Racers with an 8-5 win over Victoria Rees and Bruna Vieria at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Carla Suga earned the second point for MSU, with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles over Madison Patey. Cuntiz made the score 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over Victoria Rees and Canty then secured the win with a come-from-behind victory at No. 2 singles. The Powder Springs, Ga., native fell 6-2 in the first set to Mackenzie Bishop then won the next two sets 6-2,6 -3.
Klein then defeated Natalia Barragan (7-5, 6-4) at No. 3 singles, Pierson earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ashley Alfanso at No. 6 singles and freshman Carolyn Huerth made it a sweep for the Racers with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Teresa Franco at No. 5 singles.
The Racers will next host Evansville, Friday, Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. at Kenlake Tennis Center. The match is the annual Pink-Out match, with the team wearing pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness.
