Women’s Tennis Wraps Up Fall Season with MSU Invitational

The Murray State women's tennis team finished it Fall Season by hosting the Murray State Invitational at Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts. The Racers played host to UT Martin and Western Kentucky in the two-day tournament.
"I am really proud of how the teamcame out and competed in our last tournament of the fall," said head coach Kara Amundson. "UT Martin and WKU are solid teams top to bottom and we competed with them all weekend. Every player contributed big for us throughout the weekend and overall had our best showing this fall. It was a great wrap up to the fall season and something to build off of going into conference play in the spring."
Five of the Racers earned at least two wins, with three going 3-1 over the course of the tournament in singles play. Senior Cassidy Cunitz earned wins over Katrina Vucina (6-1,6-2) from WKU and UTM's Johanie Van Zyl (6-2,6-3) and Jodie Tiley (6-4, 3-6, 11-9).
Junior Ashley Canty also finished 3-1, defeating Anna Winkelmann (6-3, 6-1) from UTM and WKU's Katrina Vucina (6-1, 6-0) and Monta Reinfelde (6-1, 7-5). The final player to go 3-1 was freshman Carolyn Huerth. Huerth earned wins over the Skyhawks' Katie McCall (6-2, 6-2) and Jessica Silva (6-2, 6-0) and the Hilltoppers' Morgan Freeman (6-0, 6-0).
Freshman Jordana Klein and senior Ashley Pierson went 2-2 in singles play.
Canty and Klein combined to go 1-1 in doubles action, while Cunitz and sophomore Carla Suga went 1-0.
The Racers will open the Spring season, Feb. 5 at Kenlake Tennis Center in Aurora, Ky., against North Alabama.
