Racers Roll Past Mid-Continent, 103-48

The Murray State women's basketball team tallied the most points in a game since 2008 when the earned a 103-48 win over Mid-Continent at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
The Racers were led by red-shirt sophomore Erica Burgess, who tallied 18 points. Sophomore Allison Karst added a career-best 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including a 5-of-6 mark from beyond the arc. Junior Tessa Elkins and freshman Keiona Kirby were also in double digits in the scoring column for MSU, with 11 each.
The Racers earned the first basket of the game with 19:38 left on the clock, with Mid-Con earning its first shot and lead at 18:48 with a three-point shot. MSU then took over and went on a 21-0 run over a 5:30 minute span to push its lead to 23-3. The Racers followed with a 14-0 run after the Cougars next basket and led 37-5.
MSU held Mid-Con to less than 10 points until there was 4:33 remaining in the first half, when from 7:41 to 3:59 on the clock the Cougars went on an 8-2 run without a Racer field goal. However, the rest of the half was dominated by MSU, with a 10-3 run that gave them a 55-15 lead heading into the locker room.
The second half was more evenly played, with the Racers holding the advantage between 37 and 47 points until the final four minutes of the game. In the final four minutes MSU went on a 9-2 run to earn the 103-48 win.
The Racers earned key advantages in shooting percentage, rebounds and steals. MSU held the Cougars to a 27.0 (17-of-63) shooting percentage for the game, including a 16.0 percent mark in the first half. The Racers made 44.4 percent (36-of-81) of their overall shots and were 15-of-39 (38.5%) from beyond the arc. MSU also out-rebounded Mid-Con 55-44 and tallied 23 steals to the Cougars 14.
The Racers will now hit the road for four-straight games, starting Saturday, Nov. 19 at Ball State. The game will start at noon (CST). During the trip MSU will also play Alabama A&M (Nov. 22), Saint Louis (Nov. 26) and No. 9 Louisville (Nov. 29).
Notes: The 15 three's made by the Racers are the second-most in school history…the 23 steals were the third-most in school history…freshman Beth Mahurin made her first appearance for MSU, recording six rebounds, two points and a steal…all 14 players on the Racers' roster played in the game…all but one scored a point and recorded a rebound.
