The Murray State women's basketball team made a come-back in the second half, but fell short of victory, with a 76-71 loss at Alabama A&M at T. M. Elmore Gym.
The Racers (2-3) were led by junior Mariah Robinson who tallied a season-best 25 points after not scoring in the last two games for MSU. Senior Kayla Lowe and junior Kyra Watson were also in double-figures for the Racers, with 19 and 11 points respectively.
The Bulldogs opened the first half strong, going on a 14-1 run before the Racers could record their first field goal with 16:47 remaining in the stanza. Lowe's triple got MSU going and sparked a 15-0 run that gave the Racers a 15-14 advantage with just under 12 minutes to play. AAMU followed with a 5-1 run to push them to a 21-16 lead, with 8:30 left in the period. MSU kept pushing and kept the score within six to three points the rest of the half and went to the locker room trailing 36-31.
AAMU came out strong again in the beginning of the second half, going on a 10-0 run to push their advantage to 14 (50-36). However, the Racers had a lot of fight left and immediately went on an 8-0 run over the next minute to cut the advantage to six. Another 7-0 run, over a minute span two minutes later, gave the Racers a 59-57 lead. The teams traded points over the next 30 seconds before another 6-0 run gave MSU a 63-61 lead with five minutes left. With 2:45 remaining the Racers led 70-68, but were out-scored 8-1 over the final span, with all the points coming at the free-throw line, as the Bulldogs earned the 76-71 win.
Free-throws became the key to victory for AAMU, with the Bulldogs going 25-of-38 from the charity stripe, while the Racers were allowed to the line just 26 times (making 16).
MSU continues its four-game road trip after the Thanksgiving break, with a stop in St. Louis, Mo., to battle with Saint Louis, Saturday, Nov. 26 at 2 p.m.
