Racers Fall to Regular-Season Champion Morehead State

The Murray State volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-23) decision to 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Regular-Season Champion Morehead State in Morehead, Ky.

The Racers (8-21, 8-10 OVC) were led by senior Mary Cunningham, who tallied 10 kills and a .348 (10k-2e-23ta) hitting percentage.
Morehead State opened the first set with a 3-1 run and built its lead to 8-3, with a 4-0 run, and never looked back. The Racers went on a few small runs, but eventually fell 25-17.
The Eagles came out strong in the second set, going up 6-1 and pushed through to a 25-12 win.
The Racers came out of the intermission with more fire and kept the set close and in the set. Murray State took a 5-3 advantage and the Eagles followed with a 5-1 run that gave them an 8-6 lead. Morehead State held onto the lead and increased it to as many as four (17-13). The scoreboard read 21-17, in favor of the Eagles, when the Racers went on a 5-0 run that gave them a 22-21 advantage. The teams then traded the next two points before a final 2-0 run gave Morehead State the 25-23 win.
Murray State struggled to get its offense going, hitting .075 for the match, while the Eagles hit .393. The Racers were also out-blocked (11-3) and out-dug (41-22).
The Racers will finish the 2011 regular season in the friendly confines of Racer Arena to host Tennessee State (Nov 11) and Austin Peay (Nov. 12). The Nov. 11 match at 7 p.m. will be the annual Parent's Day and the Nov. 12 match at 6 p.m. will feature a tribute to the 2011 Racers Seniors.
Notes: Freshman Kelsey Van Oss earned her first career start in the match.
