Match Notes I Live Stats
The Murray State volleyball team will wrap up the regular season this weekend with matches against Tennessee State and Austin Peay in Racer Arena. Friday, Nov. 11 the Racers will battle with the Tigers at 7 p.m., with the annual Parent's Day taking place before the match. Saturday, Nov. 12 MSU will take on Austin Peay at 6 p.m. and the Racers will honor their seniors prior to the match.
Scouting Tennessee State
The Tigers are 16-10 overall and 11-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference after dropping a five-set match to UT Martin (Nov. 8).
TSU has two main hitters, with Shaquita Williams standing out. Williams is hitting at a .308 (388k-124e-857ta) pace and is adding 67 (9-58) blocks and is ranked fifth in the NCAA for her 55 (0.56/set) service aces. Terakka Walker is the other main hitter for the Tigers. Walker has 300 kills, a .165 (300k-153e-889ta) hitting percentage and adds 306 digs and 49 (3-46) blocks.
As a team, TSU leads in most of the categories on the season box score, except hitting percentage and blocking. The Tigers are being out-hit .175 to .184 and out-blocked 1.4 per set to 1.8 per set. However, they do have clear advantages in kills per set (13.0-10.6) and service aces per set (1.4-1.0).
The Series
MSU has a 41-7 advantage in the all-time series with the Tigers. The Racers lost the last meeting, but had won the previous five matches. When played in Murray, the series stands 20-2, in favor of MSU.
Scouting Austin Peay
The Lady Govs head into this weekend's matches with a 10-19 overall record and an 8-10 mark in the OVC, which puts them in a tie for sixth with MSU and Jacksonville State for the final spot in the OVC Championships.
The Lady Govs have two key hitters and one that is an all-around threat. Nikki Doyle leads the team with 388 kills, a .232 (288k-127e-1125ta) hitting percentage, 32 service aces, 310 digs and 38 (12-26) blocks. Ilyanna Hernandez is the other key hitter for APSU, with 287 kills and a .183 (287k-113e-952ta) hitting pace. Lauren Henderson is a key blocker, with 100 (21-79) and Paige Economos is the defensive leader, with 562 digs.
The Series
The all-time series with the Lady Govs is currently knotted at 31-all after APSU earned a 3-0 win early this season in Clarksville, Tenn., extending their winning streak to four matches. The Racers have played stronger against the Lady Govs when playing in Murray, holding a 17-9 advantage.
Leaving Her Mark in the Record Books
Senior Kayleah Sauer was already on the Racers career digs list at MSU, but Nov. 4 she surpassed Heather Norris (2,125) to take over the No. 1 position on the list with her 33-dig performance at Eastern Kentucky. Sauer ended the weekend with 2,140 career digs and is also ranked No. 5 on the OVC career digs list. Kristina Schoo (2006-09) from Morehead State is currently in fourth, with 2,221.
The Louisville, Ky., native also earned a spot on a second top-10 list, service aces. She has 105 career service aces, good for the No. 10 spot. She needs 17 to take over ninth from Norris (121).
Moving Up in the Career Charts
Two other MSU players are currently on, or just shy of making, career lists in at least one category this season. Senior Mary Cunningham currently has 161 block assists, moving her into eighth on the career block assist charts at MSU. She needs two more to take over seventh (163-Becca Lamb).
Junior Lydia Orf is also making a push to join Sauer in the 1,000 Dig Club. The St. Charles, Mo., native has recorded 806 digs and needs 194 to become the 14th member of the club.
Senior Recognition
The Racers will honor four of their five seniors, but it will not include senior Jade Guo who is back home in China for a family emergency. Those being recognized are No. 4 Cassy Woolverton, No. 6 Teresa Krog, No. 7 Kayleah Sauer and No. 8 Mary Cunningham.
Reaching for Milestones
When the MSU volleyball team stepped onto the court this season they were going for several milestones for both the team and head coach David Schwepker. The teams first win (Sep. 16, 2011) marked the 400th for the volleyball program in its 29 year history and the 125th OVC win for head coach David Schwepker. This is during his time as the head coach of the Racers and while at Tennessee State. Schwepker earned his 125th conference win at MSU, with the Racers 3-0 win over Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 15).
With the Racers 3-2 win over UT Martin (Oct. 28, 2011), Schwepker also recorded in 200th career victory as a head coach. He now needs 12 wins to reach his 200th win while at the helm of the Racers.
Van Oss Stepping Forward
Freshman Kelsey Van Oss had an outstanding week for the Racers, coming off the bench and making her presence know. The Beaver Creek, Ohio, native played in all three matches last week, starting with a five-block performance against Eastern Illinois (Nov. 1) that included three-straight blocks at the start of set five. She them played against EKU and earned her first career start at Morehead State, where she recorded a block solo.
Up Next
The Racers will be playing this weekend to earn a spot in the 2011 OVC Championship, which will be held Nov. 17-19 in Morehead, Ky. MSU is currently tied for sixth with Jacksonville State and Austin Peay.
