Junior Alexis Love made an immediate impact on the Murray State women's track and field record books in the first indoor meet of the 2011-12 campaign, resetting her own school record in the 60-meter dash. The Palmetto, Fla., native finished first in the race in a time of 7.57, with her old record standing at 7.66 from a season ago.
“I am excited for Alexis,” said head coach Jenny Severns. “She looked good in both the 60 and the 200. It was a great way to start the season.”
Love also participated in the 200, claiming her second first-place finish of the day, in 24.81. The school record in the event currently stands at 24.02 set by MSU legend Heather Samuel in 1994. Love also ran the third leg in the 4x400 relay in the B team for the Racers, which finished in 4:18.52.
MSU had a total of 17 members of this season's team compete in 11 events in the Saluki Fast Start, with 18 total top-10 finishes.
Sophomore Katie Forshey earned two of the top-10 finishes, with a second-place finish in the high jump and sixth-place finish in the 600. The Mahomet, Ill., native recorded a personal-best clear of 1.68m (5'6”) in the high jump and earned second on a judge's decision over teammate freshman Ashley Conway. Forshey also ran the 600 for the first time in her career, finishing in a time of 1:41.03. She was also part of the 4x400 relay that earned a third-place finish, with a time of 3:56.39.
“It was really good to see everyone compete,” added Severns. “It was really important for everyone to see where they are at going into the break. The upperclassmen led the way and everyone had a great day, including a lot of personal-bests today.”
The Racers will now be idle until Jan. 13-14 when they travel back to Carbondale, Ill., to participate in the SIU Open.
