“Evansville has always been a good match up for us,” said head coach Connie Keasling. “We have tremendous talent on this year's team, but we have not had a lot of time to practice and train together through the fall and until recently due to injuries. Talent without training does not equal great success on the tennis court.”
Senior Lindsey Wiseman picked up the lone point for the Racers, earning the teams first single victory for MSU this season. The Memphis, Tenn., native earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Pin Sorensen at No.4 singles.
Freshmen Taylor Vick and Carla Suga started the match off on a positive note for the Racers, earning an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles (the first team to finish), giving MSU the chance to claim the doubles point. Sophomore Ashley Canty and junior Cassidy Cunitz then lost a close, 8-6, set at No. 1 doubles. The doubles point came down to Wiseman and senior Alexis Webb at No. 2 doubles. The set came down to a tie-breaker, with Sorensen and Aleksandra Dzakula earning the 9-8 (7-3) win for Evansville.
MSU will now have the week off before then travel to Nashville, Tenn., for three matches over the span of two days. The Racers will first play Middle Tennessee, Friday, Feb. 18 and then battle with Ohio Valley Conference foe, Tennessee State, and non-conference opponent Belmont, Saturday, Feb. 19.
