BOX SCORE
On a night that started with the Murray State seniors being honored before their final home game of their careers, three seniors, B.J. Jenkins, Jeff McClain and Isacc Miles made sure they went out winners as the trio took over the game down the stretch to turn a one-point advantage into 66-56 victory over Eastern Kentucky and the outright Ohio Valley Conference Championship.
The victory improved the Racers to 23-7 overall (14-4 OVC) and sealed the outright OVC Championship and top seed in next week's OVC Tournament at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn.
With the Racers holding a one-point lead with just over four minutes remaining, the trio of seniors outscored the Colonels 15-6 to secure the victory. Miles started the run with a pair of free throws and then took a feed from Jenkins to knock down a three-pointer. Just seconds later, Miles returned the favor as he found a wide open Jenkins in the left corner for another three pointer. The trio also went 5-for-6 from the free throw-line down the stretch to secure the victory.
The Racers came out of the gates strong as Jewuan Long stole the ball on the first possession and raced to the other end of the court for the easy basket. The next six-and-a-half minutes belonged to Miles as the senior hit four-straight three pointers to push MSU to an 18-11 advantage.
The Colonels would close the gap to five points before Jenkins through the ball off the back of a defender on an inbounds play, put it up and in, and converted the free throw to push the lead back to eight.
The lead would grow to 10 on another Jenkins layup, but EKU outscored the Racers 7-2 over the final 4:53 to cut the lead to five, 29-24, at the half.
The second half started the same as the first with a turnover that was converted on a monstrous dunk by Ed Daniel. Miles pushed the lead to nine with a layup of his own on the next possession. A pair of Jenkins free throws off another turnover pushed the lead to 11 points just over two minutes into the half.
Ivan Aska would follow his own miss for a putback at the 15:14 mark to push the advantage back to 10, but the Colonels would go on a 10-3 run sparked by four points from Devin McDonald to cut the lead to 43-40 at the 11:12 mark.
The Racer advantage would again grow to eight points, but McDonald sparked another Colonel run that trimmed the MSU lead to one point with just under five minutes remaining.
Miles led the Racer attack by going 6-for-9 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, for 23 points. He raised his career total to 998 points and needs just two points to become the 32nd member of the 1,000-point club. Jenkins scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half, and added six rebounds, four assists and two steals. McClain added nine points and eight rebounds.
The Racers return to action Friday evening at 7 p.m. against an opponent to be determined. The game will be televised lived on ESPNU
