Racers Finish Seventh at Indoor OVC Championship

The Murray State track & field team finished seventh of eight teams at the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championship, hosted by Eastern Illinois. The Racers tallied 28.33 points, with just nine participants. MSU had two athletes earn All-OVC honors, finishing in the top-three in their events.

“We did not have the best performance this weekend,” said head coach Jenny Severns. “We did have two athletes earn all-conference honors. I was disappointed because we didn't perform at the level that I know is possible.”

Sophomore Alexis Love led all MSU participants by breaking her own school record in the 60 set earlier this season. Love ran both the prelims and finals in a time of 7.60, 0.06 better than her previous record. The time ranked her fourth in the finals. The Palmetto, Fla., native also participated in the 200, earning second place and All-OVC honors. Love ran the prelim round in 25.10 and finished the finals in 24.91.

The other student-athlete to earn all-conference honors was senior Josha Rogers. Rogers finished third in the high jump, with a season-best jump of 1.65m (5'5”).

Junior Lexie Barr was sixth in the pole vault, hitting a season-best mark of 3.20m (10'6”).

Karissa Magnuson, Katie Forshey, Christina Johnson and Rebecca Hbetamu all participated in the Distance Medley Relay, finishing in a time of 13:05.63 and taking fifth place. MSU also ran the 4x400 relay, with Johnson, Love, Forshey, and Kayla Crusham earning eighth (4:17.25).

Forshey was the only other participant for the Racers in field events, claiming eighth in the high jump (1.55m/5'1”). Other individual performances on the track include Crusham, Kristin Reffett, Johnson, Karissa Magnuson and Hbetamu. Crusham took eighth in the 5,000 (18:57.22), Reffett was 11^th in the same event (19:20.15), Hbetamu was 11^th in the 3,000 (11:08.30), Johnson finished 15^th in the 400 prelims (59.82) and Magnuson was 15^th in the 1 Mile (5:44.23).

The Racers will now have time to prepare for the 2011 Outdoor Season, as they are idle until March 18-19. MSU then travels to Winston Salem, N.C., to participate in the Wake Forest Open.
