Box Score
MSU was led by sophomore Mariah Robinson and red-shirt freshman Jessica Winfrey. Both players were one rebound shy of a double-double, with Robinson tallying 17 points and Winfrey adding 16.
APSU opened the first stanza on a 5-0 run before the Racers were able to get on the board. MSU followed with a 6-2 run over the next minute to cut the deficit to one. The teams traded baskets for the next 1:30 before the Lady Govs (9-16, 8-5 VOC) went on a 7-2 run, until 11:30 remained in the half, without a MSU field goal. The Racers again followed with a 5-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to one again (17-18). APSU had a 10-0 run from 8:30 to 4:15 remaining to push its advantage to 12, but a 9-2 run over the final minutes of the game by MSU cut the lead to 33-28 at the half.
The Racers came out ready to play in the second half and went on a 6-0 run in the first two minutes that gave them a short advantage. After APSU scored its first bucket of the half, both teams held each other scoreless for the next two minutes. The Lady Govs tallied the next two points, but MSU followed with a 7-0 run that gave them the lead again with 12:55 to play (43-41). However, an APSU 10-0 run turned the tables for good and pushed the lead back out to eight (43-51). The Racers fought the rest of the half, but could not cut the deficit to less than four points on the way to the loss.
The teams were close in most statistical categories, with the Lady Govs garnering a slight shooting advantage (37.1% to 31.3%) and earning seven more attempts at the charity stripe (14-of-16 to 19-fo-23). MSU earned a slight rebounding advantage (44-43), including a 13-10 mark on the offensive glass.
The Racers will now be off until Thursday, Feb. 10 when they host league-leading Tennessee Tech at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
