Breds Stumble in Series Opener at Georgia State

Teams to play second game of series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Georgia State jumped out to an early lead and did not look back as they handed Murray State a 17-6 defeat in the series opener Friday evening at The Field at Panthersville in Atlanta, Ga.
The Panthers (16-4) got on the board in the first inning as Mark Micowski started the inning with a double to right center and scored when Drew Shields singled on a bunt to second and the throw was wide of first. After a lineout moved Shields to third, a wild pitch allowed him to score the second run of the frame.
GSU added to its lead in the second as the they put in scoring position with two outs, and Micowski plated both runners with a single to right field. After stealing second, Shields scored the runner with a single to right field.
The Panthers added to the lead in the third as they got run-scoring doubles from Ryan Fleming and Bryan Condotta, along with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Shane Hammond.
The Breds (8-9) got on the board in the fifth inning as Wes Warren started a two-out rally with a single up the middle. Cody Larson drove in Warren with a double just inside the bag at third. Elliot Frey followed with a bouncer back through the middle to score Larson from second.
GSU got the two runs back in the home-half of the inning as Micowski delivered an RBI single through the right side and the second run scored on a steal of home.
The bottom of the MSU got things going again in the seventh as Warren reached on an error with one out and scored on Larson's triple into the gap in right center. Frey followed with his second RBI of the game with a bloop single over the head of the shortstop.
The Breds did not go quietly in the ninth as Warren walked and went to second on a passed ball. Larson delivered his third extra-base hit of the game with a run scoring double to left center. A wild pitch advanced Larson to third, and Ty Stetson drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right center.
Jake Donze (2-1) took the loss after allowing eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits and three strikeouts over three innings. Charly Olson (2-2) earned the victory after allowing two runs on five hits and five strikeouts over six innings.
Larson led the offense by going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and three RBIs. Frey added two hits and two RBIs.
The two teams play the middle game of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. The Breds will send RHP Tyler Beers to the mound, while the Panthers will counter with LHP Aidan Francis.
