Late Free Throws Push Lady Govs Past Racers in OVC First Round

MSU was led by red-shirt freshman Jessica Winfrey and sophomore Mariah Robinson. Winfrey tallied her 10th double-double of the season, 16 points and 12 rebounds, while adding a career-best three steals. Robinson tallied 28 points and added five rebounds for the game.
The Racers started the half with a 4-0 run before the Lady Govs were allowed to get on the scoreboard two minutes into the game. MSU held the lead until the first five minutes had ticked off the clock. With 15:51 left to play APSU started a 14-0 run that lasted the next four minutes to take a 16-8 advantage. MSU was then sparked on a 7-0 run by Winfrey to cut the lead to one (16-15), but the Lady Govs followed with a 10-0 run to take the lead for good in the stanza. In the final five minutes APSU added to its advantage with a 9-4 run and went to the locker room leading 43-28.
The Lady Govs started the second half with a 5-1 run before Robinson got the first field goal to fall at 18:07. The Beaver Dam, Ky., native hit a three from the corner and added a free throw for a four-point play that started a 6-0 run. The teams traded points over the next four minutes before the Racers started a 16-2 run that cut the deficit from 19 points to zero, with 4:38 remaining. APSU followed with a 5-0 run over the next minute to take a 61-56 advantage. The lead was again lost, as MSU tied the game at 61 with 2:34 remaining. However, that was as close as the Racers were able to get, with APSU going on a 10-3 run, with most of their points coming from the charity stripe, to end the game with a 71-64 advantage.
The Lady Govs earned a clear advantage in the shooting columns, making 50 percent of their overall shots and 46.7 percent of those from beyond the arc. The Racers shot 36.1 percent from the field and 28.0 percent from three-point range. MSU earned a 39-34 advantage in the rebounding column, including a 14-7 mark on the offensive glass.
Notes: MSU is now 12-17 in the OVC tournament after their 18th appearance…sophomore Tessa Elkins tallied 10 rebounds, for her second-straight game with double-digit rebounds.
