The Racers (4-10, 1-1 OVC) and the Tigers did not compete in doubles competition first after being forced to move inside due to inclement weather and a short supply of indoor courts. The match was decided after the singles matches so the doubles were not contested.
“It was a good match for us,” said head coach Mel Purcell. “TSU competed strong especially on their fast indoor courts. We were able to take care of business and now just have to get ready for the weekend.”
Freshman Joao Camara was the first to finish and started the match strong for MSU, with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over Gregory Ruffin. Senior Jorge Caetano conceded the lone point to TSU, losing at No. 1 singles to Lawrence Washington.
Senior Renaldo Domoney finished third, with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Skyler Dowdy. Fellow senior Luka Milicevic finished shortly after with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles over Shaun Ingram.
The deciding point was earned by senior Mason Johnson at No. 5 singles. Johnson swept Matt Ingram 6-0, 6-0 for the fourth point of the match. Senior Jadir Semensin claimed the final point of the match for the Racers, with a default win at No.6 singles.
MSU will play its next match at home Saturday, April 2 when Tennessee Tech comes to town for a 10 a.m. match at Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts. The match will start with the annual Senior Day to honor the Racers five seniors: Renaldo Domoney, Jorge Caetano, Luka Milicevic, Mason Johnson and Jadir Semensin.
