Murray State men's basketball head coach Billy Kennedy announced the signing of 6-3 guard Stacy Wilson from Coffeyville Community College in Coffeyville, Kan.
Wilson comes off his sophomore season with the Red Ravens where he earned Jayhawk Community College Conference and Region-6 second team honors after leading Coffeyville in scoring with 14.4 points per game, and in steals with 70.
“Our goal was to add some size and maturity on the perimeter,” Kennedy said. “We struggled last season guarding the bigger wings in our league and Stacy will provide us help in that area. He played for one of the best Juco programs in the country and led his team to fifth place in the national tournament.”
Indeed, Wilson was a big part of Coffeyville's 33-5 run in the 2010-11 season. He scored a team-high 23 points against Shelton State in the fifth-place game and he had eight 20-point games in the 2010-11 season, including 28 against Labette on 11-of-18 shots from the field.
He was a 46 percent shooter from the field and hit 39 percent of his three-point shots. An 81 percent shooter from the free throw line, Wilson was second on his team with 90 assists.
“Stacy is very versatile and he matured a lot in the two years he was in our program,” Coffeyville Coach Jay Herkelman said. “When he came here out of high school, he was known mainly as shooter, but he has advanced so much in his ball handling and scoring off the dribble, and is now an offensive threat in many ways.”
“I challenged him to guard the best perimeter player on the other team this season and he responded well. He's a good team guy, a good leader and I think the he's the kind of guy Murray State fans will enjoy watching.”
As a freshman at Coffeyville in the 2009-10 season, Wilson scored 11 points per game with 60 assists and 32 steals which earned honorable mention honors in the Jayhawk Conference.
Wilson was one of the team captains this past season.
“We played a lot of guys every game, and Stacy and two others on our team were capable of putting up big numbers. But Stacy was happy to play together and we won a lot of games,” Herkelman added. “He was out in front for us, showing our freshmen what it takes. He always put the team first.”
“Coach Kennedy and their staff did a great job recruiting Stacy all through the process and they made it known how much they wanted him to be part of their program.”
Wilson played his prep basketball at Mullins High School in South Carolina where he scored 20 points per game and earned all-state honors from the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association for class 2A. MHS won more than 40 games in his final two seasons, which included a Class 2A runner-up finish. He was also selected to play in the Carolina's All-Star Classic.
