Murray State Athletics Director Allen Ward announced Thursday that the Racers men's basketball series with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will continue, with a new four-year contract that will take one of college basketball's best rivalries through 2014.
The four-year agreement calls for Murray State to play in Bowling Green Dec 1, 2011, with WKU playing at MSU's CFSB Center Dec. 1, 2012. The Racers will play in Bowling Green in 2013 with the Hilltoppers coming back to Murray in 2014. Exact dates for the 2013 and 2014 games will be determined later.
“I'm excited for all the Racer fans that wanted to see this series continue,” Allen Ward said. “I want to thank Ross Bjork, Todd Stewart and both coaching staff's for their commitment to finalizing the details of this extension. It's good for college basketball and both institutions to continue this storied rivalry.”
“It's a great game for our fans and program,” MSU Head Coach Billy Kennedy said. “Western Kentucky has a great tradition of success, as we do, and we're looking forward to continuing the series.”
“We are excited to be able to extend this series with Murray State,” WKU head coach Ken McDonald said. “They are one of our most historic rivals, and this is a game that each fan base eagerly anticipates. Coach Kennedy does a great job and they have an excellent program.”
The MSU-WKU rivalry is one of the longest running series in the game dating back to 1932 and spanning 148 games. From 1948 to 1982, the two teams competed in the Ohio Valley Conference. After WKU left to play in the Sun Belt Conference, the teams have played 19 times, with the Racers winning 10 and the Hilltoppers nine.
The new four-year agreement means the series will stretch to eight-straight seasons when the 2014 game is played, marking the second time the series will have been played in that many consecutive seasons. They also played eight-straight seasons from 1997 to 2004.
