BOX SCORE
A costly error in the third inning helped Eastern Illinois score four runs on their way to a 5-3 victory over Murray State in the second game of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Coaches Stadium.
The Breds (14-22, 5-5 OVC) got on the board in the first inning with a Ty Stetson single through the right side and a Brandon Elliott bunt base hit. After a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Travis Isaak, Jacob Rhodes drove in a run with a groundout to first base.
MSU added another run in the third as Elliott ripped an 0-2 pitch just inside the bag at third for a leadoff double. After moving to third on a flyout, Rhodes drove in Elliott with a single up the middle against a drawn-in infield.
The Panthers (14-22, 7-6 OVC) took advantage of a fielding error in third that helped push across four runs. With the bases loaded and one out, a line drive that deflected off the glove of the shortstop to score the first run. After two runs scored on back-to-back bases-load walks, Ben Thoma delivered a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Breds got one run back in the fourth as Elliot Frey singled off the body of the pitcher with one out. A failed pickoff attempt was thrown down the right-field line and Frey was able to hustle all the way around the bases to slide in just ahead of the tag to score all the way from first.
EIU extended the lead in the sixth as Ben Thoma hit a controversial solo home run down the left-field line that appeared to be foul, but called a home run.
Tyler Beers (3-5) suffered the loss after allowing four runs, two earned, on two hits over 2.1 innings. Brent McNeil (2-1) earned the victory in relief after allowing one unearned run on three hits and six strikeouts over four innings. Matt Miller (4) earned the save after retiring both hitters he faced.
Rhodes led the offense by going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Elliott added a pair of hits and scored a run.
The Breds return to the diamond Tuesday afternoon as they play host to Evansville at 3 p.m. at Reagan Field.
