“We competed well against the defending OVC champions and that is all that you can ask for from your team,” said head coach Mel Purcell. “I hope they will continue to compete this weekend with the must-win situation we are now in with the final two matches of the regular-season this weekend.”
The Racers (4-13, 1-4 OVC) lost the doubles point, but saw strong competition at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Senior Jorge Caetano and freshman Arthur Valle battled to an 8-5 loss at No. 1 doubles and senior Mason Johnson and junior Jose Berardo fell 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
EKU took all of the singles matches, with Valle and senior Luka Milicevic putting up the strongest MSU showings. Valle battled with Parul Verma to 6-4, 6-4 decisions at No. 5 singles. Milicevic lost 6-4, 6-3 to Philip Janz at No. 4 singles.
The Racers will now travel to Eastern Illinois, Saturday, April 9 for a must-win conference match. MSU needs to pick up the win to guarantee a spot in the six-team OVC Championship April 15-17 in Paducah, Ky. The Racers will also complete their match with Morehead State (April 10) in Nashville, Tenn.
