A day after being one of two Racers named to the 2011 All-OVC First Team, senior Lauren Buch came through in a big way as #6 seed Murray State softball won its first ever game in the OVC Softball Championships with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over #3 seed UT Martin in the opening game at Williams Field in Charleston, Ill.
The win was the first ever against the Skyhawks, having lost in all six of the previous meetings between the two teams.
Buch, the OVC batting leader with a season-ending .421 average, drilled a 1-0 pitch to right center field with Jenna Bradley on first base to put the Racers ahead for the second and final time in the game.
MSU struck right away in the top of the first as Taylor Wilson led off the game with a walk and Megan Glosser moved her to second with an infield single to the pitcher. Bradley followed with a looping fly ball single that landed in front of the left fielder to score Glosser and take a 1-0 lead.
With the score the same in the bottom of the second, Jordan Garrett tied the game for UT Martin with a solo shot to left field with one out in the inning.
The Skyhawks took their first lead of the morning two innings later, manufacturing a run after a lead-off walk and a sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to second. Pinch runner Kayla Wade scored on a single through the right side of the infield from Megan Latimer to put UTM up 2-1.
Shelby Kosmecki picked up her 11th win of the season for Murray State (24-26), limiting UT Martin to two earned runs on six hits and a pair of walks. She struck out six, including the first five Skyhawk outs. Her final strikeout of the game came with the tying run on second base as she sent Chelsea Cary down swinging for the final out of the game.
Bradley, the 2011 OVC Player of the Year, led the Racers with a pair of hits and reached base three times on the day. She kept her 12 game hitting streak alive in the first inning, was hit by a pitch leading off the third, and singled in the fifth inning.
Amanda Brandenburg took the loss for UT Martin (32-23), allowing three runs on five hits and four walks.
The Racers return to action later today in a rematch of last weekend's final regular season series against #2 seed Jacksonville State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
