Senior Elliot Frey delivered a sacrifice fly to left field with the bases loaded to cap off a three run bottom of the 11th inning as Murray State kept its postseason hopes alive with a thrilling come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Tennessee Tech in the series opener Friday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Breds (18-31, 8-12 OVC) started their comeback as Travis Isaak singled up the middle to start the inning. Jacob Rhodes followed with a grounder to second that was thrown away as the second baseman tried to flip the ball to the shortstop. Zach Noonan advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt with two strikes. Paul Ritzheimer drove in a run as he blooped a single into left center. Cody Larson drew a walk to load the bases before Wes Warren tied the game with a single up the middle. Frey wasted little time as he hit the first pitch he saw to deep left field to end the game.
The Golden Eagles (23-26, 11-11 OVC) took the lead in the top of the 11th as Franike Beech single through the left side. After a groundout advanced Beech to second, Chad Hayes delivered an RBI single to right center. After taking second on the throw, Hayes scored on a Tevis Sherfield single through the right side.
The Breds got on the board in the first as Ty Stetson ledoff with a single to center and went to second on a Brandon Elliot sacrifice bunt. Isaak walked and Rhodes singled to right to load the bases. Noonan was hit in the back by a pitch to score one run and Ritzheimer followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Isaak from third.
The Golden Eagles pushed across an unearned run in the fourth after Casanova Donaldson doubled down the left-field line and scored on an error off the bat of Zach Stephens.
MSU added a run in the eighth as Stetson singled to right field and Elliott singled to right center to put runners on the corners with one out. Isaak delivered a sacrifice bunt to the right side to score Stetson.
TTU tied the game in the ninth as a walk and a base hit put two on with out one for Hunter Rivers to deliver a two-run double to the gap in left center.
Tyler Saltsman (1-1) earned his first collegiate victory after getting the final out in the top of the 11th. Cullen Park (3-3) took the loss after allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits over 2.2 innings.
Jake Donze did not factor into the decision, but pitched a great game. He allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and five strikeouts over 8.1 innings.
Ritzheimer led the offense by going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Stetson, Elliott and Warren each added two hits each.
The teams will play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
