Junior left hander Bryan Babin tossed six shutout innings, and first baseman Cody Larson drove in three runs as Murray State handed Belmont (25-21) a 7-0 defeat in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park.
Babin (3-2) allowed just five hits over his six innings and did not allow a runner to advance past second base. He danced around a leadoff double in the sixth by getting a flyout and a 6-4-3 double play.
The Breds (16-25) got on the board in the fourth inning as Travis Isaak and Zach Noonan both singled through the left side to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt from Paul Ritzheimer, Larson delivered a two-run single just inside the third-base bag.
MSU got another run on the board in the fifth as Ty Stetson singled to left center with one out. After two wild pitches moved Stetson to third, Brandon Elliott walked and Isaak drove in Stetson with a fielder's choice groundout to short.
The Breds added to the lead in the seventh as Wes Warren reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. Stetson put down a sacrifice bunt, before Elliott was intentionally walked and Isaak was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Paul Ritzheimer and Cody Larson plated runs with base on balls. Elliot Frey collected the first inning of the inning by singling through the left side, plating two more runs.
James Buckelew (1-6) took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits, two walks and two strikeouts over six innings.
Larson led the offense by going 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs. Frey was the only other Bred with two hits as he went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
The two teams will play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
