Breds Drop Series Opener to Colonels

Eastern Kentucky scored two runs in the first inning and held the Murray State offense silent, defeating the Breds, 5-3, in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field.
The Colonels (17-29, 8-11 OVC) were aided by an error as they pushed across two runs in the first inning. Richie Rodriguez reached on a throwing error before stealing second and third. A.J. Jamison scored the runner with a groundout to short, just ahead of Jacob Daniel's solo home run to left center.
The Breds (16-27, 6-8 OVC) got one run back in the fourth inning as Travis Isaak hit a solo home run to left field, his second of the season.
EKU plated two more runs in the fourth as Bryan Soloman double off the top of the fence in left center, and was followed by an RBI triple off the fence by Michael Garcia and a run-scoring double to right center by Austin Grisham.
MSU threatened to get back in the game in the eighth as Cody Larson and Elliot Frey walked to start the inning, but the Breds only managed one run on a Brandon Elliott sacrifice fly to center field.
The Breds added one more run the ninth as Jacob Rhodes doubled to left center and scored on a Zach Noonan double to right field.
Tyler Beers (3-7) took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits in the complete game. He tied a career high with eight strikeouts and did not walk a batter. Stephen Hefler (6-4) earned the victory after allowing three runs on five hits over nine innings.
Larson led the offense by going 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored. The Breds managed just five hits in the game, four of which went for extra bases.
The two teams play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
